different, but good

After long arduous days of the relative ease of GT3, GT4 has something different to offer. The new courses and cars are great. It's interesting to watch certain Gran Prix's on TV and recognize how well the real courses are depicted in this game... way more so than in GT3. The driving takes a little getting used to, but is fun when you get the hang of it. The cars lean alot on the corners and pitch when slowing or accelerating... which is cool! I appreciate the realness that this game tries to deliver as far as driving feel, but I enjoyed GT3 for it's pure video-game-ness. I continue to play both, because I find both so different. If you were good at GT3, you may not be at GT4 and might just get frustrated with it because the car handling is so different (which is why my roommate won't play it). My only complaint about GT4 is that the displays for modifying components on your cars are complicated and not laid out well... but again, once you get used to it, it's ok.
This is a good racing simulator game. If you're a video game racer, you should own this game. If you are looking to buy a car racing game for someone, this would be an ok choice if they already have GT3 or any of the Need For Speed games. But again, it's different, more slower paced and technically oriented than other racing games, just as GT3 is.

It's a nice game

Love this game my only issiue is that it looks better on 480P then it does on 1080i, weird right? But yeah, I have the official PlayStation 3 component cables that work with both the ps2 and ps3 and have been enjoying other games in 480P. Other then that, the game play is awesome! On this game pushing the Triangle and X button at the same time to activate the progressive scan is not necessary as you can change that in the picture settings within the game.Read full review...

Get in, sit down, shut up and hold on!

Once again, the Gran Turismo series delivers with GT4. The graphics are smoother than ever. With a large enough TV screen, you may even experience the physical effects of motion!

Some of the positive points:
- A vast selection of cars to choose from
- More modifications than before, including a rear wing on most models
- More tracks with far more variety
- Ability to transfer some of your licenses and credits from GT3

Some of the negative points:
- You still can't custom paint the cars
- If you custom mod your car through an aftermarket shop, the finished car doesn't really reflect it. No graphics, names, or noticeable handling differences to set it apart from getting upgrades at the dealership
- A lot of really worthless concept and antique vehicles were introduced. My less-than-humble opinion is that the energy spent on these should have been spent in the above to items instead

Overall this is a very tight game. Apart from needing a breath of fresh life in a few spots, it's an otherwise very fun game that will provide hours of entertainment. Now to get my hands on that Logitech wheel and pedal setup...

Racing old school

Challenging races, interesting sound track except the dang Opera at the opening clip. Cars are realistic even for older graphics, driving is challenging yet realistic, the turning is a little jerky for a real car though and not fluid like newer games. Plenty of cars to choose from. No sim damage but no big loss there.Read full review...

Good game, could have better features.

Great game, physics are not realistic enough, crashes are awful, cars just bounce off each other. This is a great arcade style game, but for a simulator, I would not recommend it. Forza Motorsport for XBOX is a much better game. GranTurismo has been a favorite racing game for many years, Though GT4 lacks the real feel. Except for a much better car selection in GT4, I would actually prefer GT3, GT2 was a great PS1 game and the physics were good for that era. GT4 did not live up to my expectations of the GranTurismo legacy.Read full review...

One of the best PS2 driving games

Not many game series can be referred to as genre-defining, but in the world of console racing games, Gran Turismo fits the bill. Gran Turismo 4 features more than 700 cars from more than 80 manufacturers. As you might expect, the lineup leans heavily toward American, Japanese, British, and German makes, though you'll also have access to cars from Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Korea, among other countries. The available cars, of course, are only part of the attraction of GT4. The game also features more than 50 courses to drive, including a tantalizing mix of real-life racetracks such as Fuji Speedway, Suzuka, and Laguna Seca; a cosmopolitan array of city courses from metropolises such as Hong Kong, Seoul, and the Big Apple; rally courses on dirt and snow and ice; and old fictional friends such as Grand Valley Speedway, Deep Forest Raceway, and Trial Mountain. Two particularly notable additions to the GT4 track roster are El Capitan, a three-mile behemoth designed around the imposing granite centerpiece of Yosemite National Park, and the Nürburgring Nordschliefe. Beyond the impressive stats, the first thing any casual fan of the GT series notices are the graphics. Car models look fantastic, and though only six cars are on-track at any time, the game suffers zero slowdown, even when things pile up in the corners or during drastic elevation changes. Lighting effects that were impressive in Gran Turismo 3 are stunning in GT4, both in terms of technical achievement and artistic aesthetic. While a handful of races have no license restrictions, if you wish to move beyond used cars and an empty bank account, you'll need to earn a real racing license. Love them or hate them, the license tests return, and in GT4, the tests encompass many of the new features found in the game. Once you've earned all your licenses, you'll want to begin earning real money. The easiest way to do so is by winning races. Race series are organized in individual halls on the main map or by country of origin. Before lining up for the starting grid, you'll be able to make adjustments to your car's setup through an interface that, much like the home garage, has received a much-needed makeover. Parts are organized by relevant sections of the car, and pulldown menus let you quickly and easily switch out parts on the fly. On the positive side, the fourth iteration of GT captures the feel of tires gripping pavement like no other game in the business. Every in-car aspect of sensory input is carefully designed to provide the illusion that you are actually screaming down the streets of Paris. From a driving standpoint, Gran Turismo 4 is in a class by itself, with rollicking, rocking physics that accurately convey a sense of weight and shifting balance on all four points of the driving surface. So convincing, in fact, is the sense of realism that you'll find yourself cocking your head in enthusiastic sympathy as you barrel your way around corners or up blind hills. Controlling your car in GT4 is a pleasure, whether using the Dual Shock controller or a racing wheel. The cars are instantly responsive to even the slightest input from the controller, and if you're lucky enough to have a great racing wheel you'll experience some of the greatest and most immersive driving thrills to be found on the PS2. GT4 is a game that will keep enthusiasts busy for months. And due to its upgraded presentation, it will likely win some new fans as well.Read full review...

ANOTHER GREAT GRAN GAME!!!!!!

This is one of if not the most fun games I've ever played. First of all the graphics are top of the notch. Those guys a PD really know how to use the graphical power of the PS2. The Cars are amazing, they range from a Motor carriage to a concept Made by a Shoe Company, over 722 cars. The track from real Life Courses Like Laguna Seca and Fuji Speedway to GT originals like High Speed Ring and Midfield. And Lets Not forget the Revolutionary B-spec Mode, Tire to do do the 24-hour event, have your B-spec Driver fo it for you while you rest. Now you can actually see the pit crew work on your car. and also the new Driving Mission can be fun at times, and....... sometimes be a pain. You would think that a game like this would have No Problem but there is one, sometimes the game might get repetitive after a while and th AI is to easy, but that is easily fixed with the sound and everything else. Well the Bottom Line is this: Polyphony Digital Has done what it has done best, make great games, Gran Turismo 4 is definitely "The Ride of Your Life.Read full review...

Favorite PS2/Racing Game of All Time!

Thank You for taking care of this majestic piece of software and its disc/box/manual! I greatly appreciate your product and I wish you all the best with your future endeavors!

Mini-Review of this 2005 Masterpiece:
- Excellent Car & Make/Manufacturer Lineup
…ranging from the modest original automobiles by Karl Benz (1885 Benz Patent-Motowagen) & Henry Ford (1919 Ford Model T Tourer)
…& classic futurist designs of the Dome-Zero + Alpine A330/A110
…to the then-future (now PAST) speculative 2020 Nike One!

- Memorable Tracks, both Replicas:

LeMans, Nurburgring, Motega, Laguna Seca

& Originals like the Test Ring!

- A light & breezy soundtrack that has both the NTSC/PAL & NTSC-J iterations on offer!

- Robust GT (Career) Mode with lots of surprises like the kind you find in Used Car Lots, Prizes for All Gold on a Race Series & Driver’s License Tests, and yes…even Challenges to test your skills with the Stick, Wheel, and your mettle with all types of make/model of cars!

- 1080i on the PS2 through the Extra Video Output Options back in 2005!

- All around, a wonderfully feeling driving and simulation system that makes even Pros take notices on the level of accuracy they could convey on such limited tech!

If you haven’t played this game, set aside at least 3-4 Hours a Day each Weekend (or weekdays after work) and let this game wash through you…

You will NOT regret it!

The greatest Gran Turismo.

The forth entry in the series was a massive upgrade to the third one. With 700+ vehicles and nearly 100 course layouts, there's always something to do. Hundreds of races, beautiful photo mode and great graphics for its era put it beyond anything in the time period (2005). If you haven't played this, you must. If you have, you know how great this game was. I got it the year it came out for my seventh birthday and even my Dad was astounded by how well the game was made.
