The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Neffenegger

This book starts out a bit disoriented, or maybe its just me since this author writes with such incredible, unique imagination. However, after about a quarter of the way into the book, I found myself so involved in the book I did not want to put it down! I have not finished it yet, but this is one that I highly recommend reading BEFORE seeing the movie, as some friends have said the movie is good, but somewhat confusing in parts. If you read the novel, then it will give you more of the time frame, even if the main character in the book is different ages in the same scene. Sounds confusing, right? It is, but that is what makes this title so enriching, and sucks you right into the story. If you loved the movie 'Somewhere In Time' which was a beautiful movie, this will more than likely appeal to you, only you must absolutely use your own imagination AND realization of the years between the two characters to "get" the book.
Got this brand new book for a great price on ebay, highly rec. doing it that way as opposed to paying full price elsewhere. Book is my favorite size, the larger paperback, it is made of a wonderful texture of paper, and at this point, I just cannot say anything bad about this title, or the experience of buying it from Ebay. Thanks!

Yes It's a Love Story with Scifi... But a Real Good One

I read a review about this book when it first came out on Scifi Weekly (before they changed their name), and thought it was interesting. Then a co-worker of mine read it and adored it - which intrigued me so I bought her and I copies. I have to say that this is a love story - and I am not a fan of them. However, this love story was intriguing and enjoyable - it brings up the ideas of fate and destiny, and the time traveling could be used a metaphor for how unpredictable relationships are. I recommend this book for anyone with an open mind to a combination story - love and scifi (which don't always go together).Read full review...

Literally, a new twist to a 'timeless' tale of love

An exhilirating, deeply touching book that will draw you in and won't let go. It's a unique tale about Henry and Clare, whose unusual meeting paves way for a highly romantic and unforgettable story about life and love.

Clare first meets Henry when she is six and he, thirty-six, but the first time Henry meets Clare is when he is twenty-eight and she is twenty. The story interweaves the notion of time-travel and uses it as a tool to make a truly memorable story of love. Both Henry and Clare are bound together by knowing that they are meant to be. They feel for each other, but it is intensified by them knowing that their future is there and it is all planned out. The books narrates the story of their lives as told by Henry and Clare, taking turns in telling their story - giving their own point of view of different events in their life. Though the story jumps timelines, from Henry and Clare's first meeting, their own childhood and married lives, to Henry's visits to the past and the future, it comes out as seamless, following the progression of their relationship from beginning to end.

Though basically a love story, it gives you more than just romance (though the romantic aspect of it alone is enough for a truly good read ) - it tackles the aspects of family, marriage and friendships - as well as a philosophical view of life and meaning. Henry, being a time-traveler is plagued by knowing events that will pass, but is unable to change them despite his ability to be able to time travel. Causation, from his experience - runs forward. He can't change what is about to happen when he is in the past - as it already has happened. The only reason why he goes to the past is that he already has and it contributes to the future. Though he feels trapped knowing a future that he cannot change - he partly accepts this and at times is relieved, knowing that his future will not change, especially with the knowledge that Clare will always be there.

I highly recommend this book, as it really gives a nice twist to your usual story of romance and love - which is executed quite well. It is endearing and heartwarming and you'll fall in love with the story, and the characters, whom you'll feel very close to. Heartbreaking but truly excellent, once you've , finished reading, you'll find yourself wanting to read parts of the book again and again. Had we world enough and time, we'd enjoy moments like what Henry and Clare had shared.

fantastic book

i'd borrowed this book of my friend a long while ago, and was suddenly taken with the urge to read it again. it is essentially a very beautiful and very true love story, starring henry and clare, if more than slightly unorthodox. it gives us a glimmer of the hope of what it is like to love someone, essentially, for all time. it is very beautifully philosophical in many places, as well, and for me made me wish once more that i was able to embody characteristics from a piece of fiction. you might find some of the initial pieces odd, and it is somewhat confusing to have the time-space continuum so jumbled up, but as i'd mentioned before, this isn't my first time reading it, and it is the kind of book that just gets better with re-reading. although not wildly philosophical, it does raise a lot of questions that just basically have to do with live. a strongly recommended read.Read full review...

Read it, Read it, Read it!!!

I decided to buy this book because a friend of mine was reading it and telling me what was happening and she had me hooked. I HAD to read it for myself. (I read on average 1-2 books per week.)
This book is so good. I am a little over halfway through it and can't put it down. The love story aspect is extremely sweet. The story is written in a way that lets you relate to the characters. The author lists the dates and ages of the characters as Henry time travels, so that you don't get lost (no pun intended). Each time Henry "travels", you learn a little bit more about the story and his and Clare's relationship.
I say this is a MUST read! I really don't want it to end, but at the same time, I can't wait to find out what happens in the end.

I REALLY liked this book!

As a rule, I eschew fiction that is not reality based but this book was recommended to me by several people and I knew that it is set in Chicago. (I live in Chicago.) Also, I find the concept of time travel fascinating. So I bought it.

At first I found the book a bit confusing but soon enough caught onto what was happening as far as the time travel was concerned. The author tells the story from the separate points of view of the two main characters, each alternating section clearly labeled as to the narrator.

Ms. Niffenegger is a master of her craft. The characters are well and richly drawn. The main characters are complex and sympathetic and I found all of the characters believable and interesting. She is a masterful storyteller - suspense builds as the reader is given a clue to the ending of a situation and then the story leading up to the resolution evolves.

This is, essentially, a love story. Yet, it is not, by any means, a "chick book." Time Traveler's Wife will introduce the reader to some mind-bending possibilities and fascinating people - and throw a Chicago "sense of place" into the bargain. I highly recommend this book.

BRAIN CANDY! The Romantic Thinker's Romance.

Some people just don't get this book, and that's OK. But for those who prefer "brain candy" instead of the everyday humdrum novel, this book is a rare find.

Reminiscent of Richard Matheson's "Somewhere in Time," we follow the relationship of two somewhat ordinary people. One of them, Henry, happens to be an involuntary time traveler. During his adult years, he travels back to his wife's past, meeting her in person when she is only 5 years old.

The stage is beautifully set for a complex, emotionally charged lifetime romance. By the end of the book, I felt like Henry and Clare were real people. The author even made me feel as though time travel was entirely possible.

If you enjoy reading about the emotions of an extraordinary relationship, while having your brain buzzed at the same time, this book is definitely for you!

Audio book rating

I listened to the audio version of this book and it's very well done. They actually have two narrators, a male and a female, for Clare and Henry, which is very unusual. Both of the narrators were superb. You never heard the narrator, you only heard Clare or Henry. I have listened to a few books where the narrator was so bad it ruined the book for me. And I have listened to a few where you could almost get into the characters but the narrator kept you at a distance. This book was so well done you were completely there with Clare and Henry. Fantastic! Great book too. I only give it 4 stars because the ending was semi-soft. It felt like Audrey was done two chapters before the book was over. Too bad because this is a great work of literature.Read full review...

Fantastic Epic love story

The debut novel by American author Audrey Niffenegger, published in 2003. It is a love story about a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel unpredictably, and about his wife, an artist, who has to cope with his frequent absences and dangerous experiences. Niffenegger, frustrated in love when she began the work, wrote the story as a metaphor for her failed relationships. The tale's central relationship came to her suddenly and subsequently supplied the novel's title. The novel, which has been classified as both science fiction and romance, examines issues of love, loss, and free will. In particular, it uses time travel to explore miscommunication and distance in relationships, while also investigating deeper existential questions.Read full review...

The Time Traveler's Wife is a must read!

This book is not a quick read, but it is wonderfully entertaining. Henry travels through time and finds himself in various predicaments that eventually lead to the recognition of his personal history.

The reader learns about Henry and the other main characters as he travels through time. The reader is responsible for keeping all the time periods straight! Quite a challenge, but the author's attention to detail makes the challenge worth the effort.

The main setting is Chicago, Illinois and the main characters are successful and educated, fully engaging in the city's culture. The reader relates to each of the characters' plights, knowing that each piece of the puzzle brings the reader one step closer to some type of resolution.

I could not put this book down! Find some time and read this book.
