Hellboy is Beautiful to Watch but Bad Movie...

I might not be the best person to review Hellboy because I'm not a hardcore comic book fan (or any kind of comic book fan for that matter). So if you are a Hellboy enthusiast - or simply a comic enthusiast - take what I say with a grain of salt... that said, I do like these theatrical remakes of the comics - Sin City is a favorite of mine if you've read my reviews. So now that my prefacing is out of the way - this is my blunt review of the movie:

Hellboy is a visually stunning and overly satisfying film that looks superb on any great television... My praise ends there because the list of no-name actors are not appealing or talented and the storyline drags a little bit. I've heard rave reviews about Hellboy from critics, comic fans, non-comic fans alike - and I've heard really negative reviews as well. I fall in between - the movie is worth a watch purely for the asthetics - but thats really about it. I couldnt get into the story and was rather frustrated by the acting and plot. But you decide and then write a review because I'd love to read it!

Man Do I Love This Movie!

The very first thing that impressed me about this movie, limited use of CGI. CGI is so stupid and played out. When I watched the making of the updated Hulk movie, they showed how they created the Life-Like-Model of the Hulk. They used a Hulk green mask on a long stick. So the actors and actresses were trying to method act while looking at a paper face on a stick. How can someone really commit themselves to this? Hellboy used bodysuits. Which allowed the actors to truly build up a level of fear for the evil creatures they were fighting. This made the reactions so believable. I lost myself in the movie because of this very fact. The director Guillermo del Toro, whether he used bodysuits on purpose or he just had limited funds, made Hellboy an ever better movie by doing the movie this way.

I don't like writing long reviews of movies, because I hate it when other people write about every scene and spoil the movie for someone. So I will just keep it simple. The story is solid, the music fits perfectly into the scenes and the actors and actresses could not have done a better job. Hellboy also has his weaknesses. He is not Superman, he can only lift close to 1000 pounds, and he can be damaged just like a human can. This allows the viewer to really relate to him. Characters like Superman and the Hulk are just way too powerful and for me at least, hard to relate to.
If you love the Hellboy movies, check out the cartoon movies as well. They use the same actors and actresses for the voices "Which is something that rarely happens." They are just as enjoyable to watch.

Hellboy is just a great superhero movie!

Great movie

I bought this movie because I really liked it. The directors cut didn't have that much difference (more details), but it has a ton of extras which I haven't seen plus a few pages from the book that is used in the movie to conjure Rasputin from the dead. All in all it's a great buy!Read full review...

Hellboy Director's cut

You know what you're going to get with a movie about Hellboy, and del Toro doesn't disappoint, infusing the story with tongue and cheek humor (although it can be argued that it comes at the expense of action). A good comic book movie, superior to the sequel, and a beautifully put together DVD package.Read full review...

Cult Status Deserved!

Surprisingly enjoyable, thanks to a sense of humor all too rare in the genre. Hellboy is a great character brilliantly protrayed by Pearlmen (he's come a long way from Beauty and the Beast). Del Torro set design is beautiful and dark. I purchased the three disc extended edition. It's thirteen minutes longer and adds more sufficent character development while still retaining the pace and excitement of the original version.Read full review...

Hellboy 2004

My eight Year old walked away -- I watched the whole movie and enjoyed it, his mom, loved it, she thinks Ron Perlman is the best and remembers him from "Beauty and the Beast" Television show.
It was funny, action packed and the monsters were very well done. There are parts that are heart warming, funny, and maybe scary. The special effects won't let you down.Read full review...
