Hidalgo (DVD, 2004)

This was an entertaining movie about a supposed horse race in the 1890's. It set in the Arabian Desert with what are supposed to be the finest horses in the world. Former Army Scout, Frank Hopkins, and his legendary horse, Hidalgo, have been challenged by an Arab Sheik (Omar Sharif) who owns the finest horse in the world, El Halal. Hopkins is half white and half Sioux Indian, and is a performer in a Wild West Show. Hidalgo is a Mustang, and infamous for winning hundreds of endurance races. When he arrives in Arabia, he is greeted with skepticism, and everyone tells him to leave and not risk something that his horse can't possibly accomplish. The race is several hundred miles long and is an endurance race that probably only a handful of the horses will even complete. Hopkins and Hidalgo stay and compete, and win the race. This race has never been confirmed to have ever been real, but the story is good.Read full review...

Very good movie

This is an old movie I have never seen before. It is not for children due to some situations. The violence could be unsettling for the little ones.

Hildago story is NOT true!

This story is NOT true - the characters in it are made up. There never was a Lady Davenport - in actuality - Homer Davenport didn't visit the Desert for the horses he imported to the USA until 1906! Going from memory - he either was a very young child or not even yet conceived in the year that this fictictional story was supposedly being portrayed to be in!

The writers of this story didn't do much if any real research on this topic as far as getting a lot of facts correct. Lady Wentworth and Wilfrid Blunt WERE in the desert in the years this story is supposedly set in - a FAR, FAR cry from any "Lady Davenport". Homer Davenport was not near old enough to have children in these years!!!!!!

If research was really done on this character Frank - the writers would find out that he was well known for his gigantic lies in the stories he told about himself - he NEVER was in the Buffalo Bill show - as he claims. There are also the IMPOSSIBLE stories that he was known to tell of things he did (in his mind) that never happened.

If I didn't know what I do about Arabian horses and their history - I could easily have been lead to believe that this story was true - but the true fact of the matter is that it is all fictional. I was LIVID while watching the movie, attended with members of our local saddle club. If the film had made it clear that for the most part - it was fictional, I wouldn't have been seeing quite as much red about it as I did - but to pass it off as being true - NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOO!

If the movie makers are going to bill a picture as being true - then they should do indepth research and get the entire story accurate - such as leaving out the part of a "Lady Davenport" - who never existed for starters....and then the list continues to get quite long from that point on out.

If you watch this - keep in mind that very LITTLE of the story is even true. Frank and his horse Hildalgo DID definitely exist - but that is about where anything true leaves off.

If I were to grade this on the story alone - it would get a big fat 1 as a grade in a scale of 1 - 100 = a bottom line F-. The horses name, Hildalgo and its owner, Frank - are all that qualifies it for 1 measley point - the saving grace from a big Fat ZERO!

I gave it a Below Average rating - because the subject was entertaining - but if adding in the fact that it was being passed off as being a "true" story over fictional - my rating would drop off of the 1-5 chart. Storywise - I was extremely disappointed in the story line. The action was good and held one riveted to the seat at times - the 4 horses used to portray the subject horse were pretty but beyond that - everything else was disappointing - since it was all based on a real mans proven lies being portrayed as being true.

Hidalgo is the name of the horse, which is very much a main character in the story.

I enjoy horse stories, I like Viggo Mortensen and find his connection to his horse very touching. The movie has a good plot and engaging characters well-acted by the cast.

Based on true story

Loved it so much. I’ve watched it so many times. I could no longer find it on Netflix or Hulu so i bought it. Horses are powerful creatures and they have hearts that bond with their humans.
It is an amazing story. Read full review...

SUPER!

Frank Hopkins' trying to preserve the American Mustangs always fascinated me. This movie gave an exciting and applaudable insight on his life's work. The famous Desert Race was an outstanding recreation of the event which kept me breathless throughout. The exploitation of the American Indians after the Civil War was another factor in the movie that was too heartwrenching to ignore. All in all, Hidalgo shows spirit and respect towards those who deserve it. I bought it to show my grandchildren not to take old stereotyped cowboy and indian movies seriously. Hidalgo (2004, DVD) Brand New

Starring Viggo Mortensen, Omar Sharif, Zuleikha Robinson, Louise Lombard,

I Asolutely love this movie, the storyline is powerful! I bought this DVD because I will watch it more than once! I have always loved mustangs and cowboys and westerns, and this story is another to add to my list of favorite movies! This is one of those movies that once you get into it; you know it’s going to be a real spellbinder and you are along for a fast paced adventure!

It is an old time adventure, back in the Wild West where men were men and women were, well, women! The story line has heart, the lead characters have strength and spirit (I hear that there were about 6 different “actors” who played the role of Hidalgo), and the epic scenery and sand storm affects are astoundingly heart racing!

This is not a movie for the kiddies as there is violence (a man does get beheaded, but I assure you, no animals were hurt in the filming of this movie).

Below are a few reviews and information about this 2004 movie release. If you like westerns, cowboys, horses and fast paced adventure, you will love Hidalgo!

Based on True story, an old-fashioned tale of adventure and courage, this film pits a down-on-his-luck cowboy (Viggo Mortensen) and his unpedigreed mustang, Hidalgo, against a hostile desert environment, the purest-blooded Arabian racehorses, and their riders, some of whom are determined to win at any cost.

I highly recommed this DVD to those who love adventure and the wild wild west!
