Slow & Old IDE Laptop? Hitachi 7200RPM Drives Can Show You the Light!!!

Well, this is definitely a tough one for sure...

After using SATA drives for several years now, its (really!) tough to 'think back' to IDE performance curves & try NOT to be biased for how 'slow' they seem to be...naturally they are going to 'seem' much slower nowadays 'cause we are so used to WAY faster data transfer speeds w/ modern SATA drives...going from MB per second to multiple GB per second is a huge quantum leap of noticeable speed!...

Cons (if any!): So...this drive could probably be a five in realistic terms, to be honest 'bout it...there was just one quirk i had that made me rate it as a '4'...the noise...this drive actually replaced an OEM Hitachi 40G Travelstar, so i assumed it would be relatively the 'same', with a little more turbo & capacity!
...well it IS indeed those things (and very well i might add!), but it also added some louder acoustics that werent so 'prominent' w/ the original Travelstar...dont take this as THE dealbreaker, because believe me, its NOT that big a deal @ all...im just used to my WD Scorpio Blacks...can you say silence?!?...EXACTLY!!! ;) ...anywho, its not that loud, i just notice a difference...

Pros: This drive does EXACTLY what it should, and does a very EXCELLENT job of achieving it!...to be descriptive of its 'true' capabilities, it literally sped up both boot times from cold, and shutdown times as well by a noticeable margin!...as a replacement drive, it is fulfilling ALL required facets as an upgrade to performance & speed as well...granted, the OEM Travelstar was a 4200RPM and allowed the new one to shine well! :), but it is also competing literally against its 'sibling', so it was a cool comparison to watch!...boot up times w/ OEM 4200RPM TS was 5min27 sec; shutdown was 2min37 sec (ugghhh! :( )...AFTER install of the 7200RPM TS was spectacular! boot up time 2min35 sec; and get this, shutdown time of 15-17 sec! AWESOME! ;) ...programs load probably 3-5x faster than before (literally, no exaggeration)...and there is ALOT less 'lagtime' between what i am doing, the mouse is doing, & what the computer is 'supposed' to be doing (wow, that is really annoying, huh!)...i am REALLY glad that stuff is not so common after the swap!!!...

Anyway, the drive is a definite WINNER in my book, probably one of the best quality built drives around...the IBM's (drives) are also made by Hitachi for them & are Travel/DeskStars as well, so you know they gotta be pretty 'high-end' drives to be in those machines 'OEM' as well!...This drive FULLY serves the purpose as an UPGRADE choice for just about any drive & speed out there, i think it would probably outperform it 'hands-down', even if for matching capacity swap, even though thats always nice too!...

fast and excellent in IDE

7200rpm is 50% faster than 5400rpm
but fans need to be good working
The Hitachi Travelstar series of hard drives is a solid industry leader in performance and reliability.

The 7K100 80GB model is a second-generation wonder that offers extreme data throughput, thanks to a sizzling 7200rpm spindle speed, but that sizzle doesn’t translate to waste heat because the 7K100 uses sufficiently less power than other drives that the extra heat isn’t generated to begin with!

Hitachi’s own battery life extender technology, a power management suite allowing you to extend battery life and power consumption, keeps things calm and quiet, too, with a low power idle of less than a watt.

Great performance and value

I purchased this for an older laptop, I wanted to upgrade rather than purchase a newer one. The performance is great. I installed Windows XP without any problems and use it daily. The size, speed and price were exactly what I needed.Read full review...

Good, solid refurbished hard drive.

Good solid hard drive (even being used). The price point was good for my customer and it's still running strong today. Thanks for your help!

Good price, Great performance.

This is a nice drive, it's faster and quieter than the older drive which was 5400 rpm. Absolutely no problems with it - if you are upgrading the hard drive on an older laptop this is a good choice.

I am well pleased.

I really enjoy this Hitachi HD, and it has done all that I was expecting. This HD is exactly what I was wanting and is working exactly as I wanted. I bought this to upgrade from a lesser 30 GB HD and this has met the expectations that I was wanting. I am well pleased with this item.Read full review...
