I, Robot (DVD, 2004)

Set in 2035 Chicago, Will Smith as detective Spooner is on the trail of a killer robot. Practically all labor is performed by robots, and a new series is about to be released in a couple of days. Dr. Lanning, the man credited as the father of robotics, and the man who wrote the three laws of human robotics, has committed suicide. At least that is what everyone presumes. . .after all, if he didn't, then he was murdered by a robot. Detective Spooner has been requested to investigate. Spooner was physically rebuilt by Dr. Lanning after losing his left arm and shoulder in a major accident. Spooner is sure that Lanning hasn't committed suicide, and he is banking on clues left by Dr. Lanning to lead him to the solution of this crime.

The new roll-out of computers will mean that there will be one robot to every five humans. Something is happening to the robots. They are evolving, and developing emotions and responses not programed. The head of all robot intelligence is a super computer named V.I.K.I. Every day V.I.K.I. sends downloads to all of the robots, like updates on your computer. Spooner finds out that Dr. Lanning was being held virtual prisoner at U.S. Robotics Corp. VIKI was seeing everything, and Dr. Lanning was afraid that through VIKI there was going to be a robot take over. He built one robot, Sonny, that didn't have the three laws and was made of alloys stronger than the others, and wasn't completely under VIKI's control.

Along with Sonny, and Dr. Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), a robotic "shrink", they stop VIKI from taking control. Just imagine a similar scenario in which computers become smarter than man, and then network to eliminate man. This is a good movie.

I, Robot - Not the book, but quite good

"I, Robot" is a cyberpunk thriller with plenty of storyline to keep you interested. Will Smith plays "Detective Spooner", a public servant who does not trust the robots that have become an integral part of society. The plot is a mix of "man goes on a journey", "boy meets girl", and a little "capture and escape". There is a decent amount of violence, but mostly gun play resulting in a bunch of robots getting thrashed by Spooner.

The movie carries a few themes "suggested" by Issac Asimov's book. However, those who have read the book should not expect to watch the book on the big screen. Instead, the reader should consider the world created by Issac Asimov only as the setting of the movie, as the compendium defining the rules that guide the story forward. Then, the reader will also be able to enjoy a great movie in addition to an even greater book.

I was most impressed by the way cutting edge technology and architecture were inserted along-side existing knowledge and construction. This theme continued throughout the movie with humans and robots, old robots and new robots, and ultimately good robots and bad robots. When you watch the movie, you'll feel that the robot future isn't too far off.

I hope you enjoy "I, Robot".

Totally enjoyable!

I love this movie for its cast of characters. Alan Tudyk voices Sonny. He was Wash on the short lived series Firefly.

I ROBOT

The movie is an understandable sci-fi story with Will Smith playing the lead character. Smith plays the role of a detective that doesn't take a lot of things at face value, unlike most everyone else around him. Although his character is a younger person, he seems to have an interest in things from 20 years ago (from his position in time). The special effects are just the right amount and are not over done. If you are a Will Smith fan; or a sci-fi fan, the movie is good. If you are a Smith AND a sci-fi fan the movie is VERY good.Read full review...

A good Piece of work.

I love science fiction and have read Issac Assimov book. Let's be fair, books seldom match the movies ! I did enjoy the action, the lead role played by Will Smith was good but that robot "Sonny" stole the action for me. The female lead could have been a little more intense but, I had a great time watching those robots in action. The price was great also.Read full review...

Will Smith, great as always

Will Smith plays a great role in this movie, as always. This is definitly a great movie. Lots of action combined with a real situation that can definitly happen in the future.

After seeing this movie, you start to think about how this can actually happen. Human intelligence can ultimately have control over humans, and a horrible situation like this can happen.

But when Will Smith is in the movie, you know you are in for quite a ride, and he will do everything he can to prevent the worst from happening.
Overall, great movie, I definitly think it is worth the purchase.

I, Robot

Even if you don't like sci-fi, you could enjoy this movie. It is a very good murder mystery set in a sci-fi genre. The movie is set in the year 2035 and depicts robots doing many of the jobs and chores that we humans wouldn't mind giving up to them. It seems very believable that our future could be much like that depicted in this movie. It makes term "sci-fi" for this movie almost inappropriate.

The acting is good and if you like Will Smith and enjoy a good murder mystery, you'll like this movie.

Great Will Smith science-fiction film. Good for pre-teen, teens, young and mature adults, and really mature retirees. Fast paced and believable sometime in the future. Will is easy to watch, fun and fit.Read full review...
