Fiction but we'll done fiction

Not historically true but a darn good yarn, with some Oscar worthy acting by Don Johnson . Surprise appearance by Rod Steiger, an Oscar winner, who never fails to impress

But I bought it for some of the best cinematic footage of horses out there. Some of the shots make you feel as if you are in the herd

All in a made for TV movie, well worth the price of admission

It was okay.

It just doesn't pull off being a better than okay movie. It should have, but the acting was predictable and so-so even though it had big name talent. The portrayal of the military was fine---the presentation of the closeness of comrades in arms was pretty good---which saved the movie.
Since there isn't an okay box to check off for the value, etc., I left them blank. My Dad and his cavalry unit had to turn their horses in at Fort Robinson, NB after only a three day notice to do so---so I do have some empathy with the movie.

Not the Don Johnson of Miami Vice; U.S Calvary's last days captured spot on

A little research revealed that this movie which opens with the phrase "based on a true story" was more based on the producers imagination than any true facts. HOWEVER this movie really delivers a top notch story that I used in teaching ethics to young military officers while I was on active duty. Set in that often forgotten period of miltary history between WWI & WWII it touches on many historical facts that the army and country were facing during this changing period. If you have an affinity towards the horse calvary and military history then this is a really good movie to have in your arsenal. DON'T let the fact that it stars Don Johnson scare you off. This is not the Miami Vice version. He was very believable as a senior enlisted man at the end of his own career and at the end of an era for the army. Appropriate for the entire family aside from on scene where they had to shoot some horses.Read full review...

This is a rewarding story of a soldiers compassion for his horse

Great movie about love and respect for horses and the roll they played in history. I had saw parts of it on the movie channel but never all of it. I found it on ebay at a great price and I enjoyed it very much. I thought it was a well directed movie that told a story of the governments ability to sacrafice yet with a rewardingly just and happy ending. I would rate it at four stars for content and actors preformance.Read full review...

A true account

Met an elderly lady in California at her ranch. Before mentioning the movie, she told us a story of her father's father involvement in a "run" to Canada in order to save two hundred Army Horses. The man was Irish as were most of the crew who went along.
When I did see the movie, it was very close to the story she told us. Whenever I can I introduce my friends to this film. No one has been disappointed yet.
I've had the DVD forever, but I bought several more copies; I needed more gifts for more new friends.
One of the best, if not the best, that Don Johnson has made!!!

Save the horses

A wonderful story of how a few saved so many and beat the government at its worst. The decision to destroy these animals was heartless, to say the least, and the bravery of the men involved to save them was nothing short of heroic and heartwarming.Read full review...

In Pursuit of Honor is Great Fictional Story

I bought the DVD to upgrade the movie from a VHS. It is a great horse story about the latter days of the US Calvary prior to World War II. The story is pure fiction but shows General Douglas MacArthur in a bad light. It opens with scenes from the Bonus Army march on Washington DC and illustrates the problems with government budget cuts and the small peace time army. The Army was upgrading to tanks and mechanized vehicles. The horses were becoming a liability. It is a great fictional story with some good horsemanship and beautiful scenery.Read full review...

I love westerns and this story showed the transition of the US Cavalry from horse to machine.
