John Carpenter + Lovecraft + Sam Neill + Apocalypse

When this was released in theaters, being only a child, I found myself buying that tiny paper ticket from the theater admissions desk only because at the time, nothing interesting was playing. When I left the movie, I spent some hours after trying to wrap my head around what it is I just saw. "What is reality" is the phrase or question the film keeps pushing up against you. "What is reality"?

I've seen this movie at least 30 times in the 24 years since it's theatrical release I still ponder the questions and consequences of this film entertains.

For the few who've never seen this treasure in horror cinema I'll give you the rundown. Sam Neill plays John Trent, a freelance insurance investigator who's given a job from an insurance company that's responding to a multi-million dollar claim from a publishing house. The publisher's claim that their star author, Sutter Kane along with most of his new manuscript have gone missing (hence the need for the claim). John Trent begins fishing around to see if the publishers are lying. He soon realizes this is no ordinary case. He soon discovers this is no common disappearance.

A quote from the movie sums up the red meat of the plot; "it's not real from your point of view and right now reality shares your point of view. What scares me about Kane's work is what would happen if reality shared his point of view... Reality is what we tell each other it is. Sane and insane could easily trade places. If the insane were to become the majority you would find yourself locked in a padded cell wondering what happened to the world."

I still to this day marvel at the few, unnamed souls who can't grasp the genius behind this film and it's myriad of ideas. After watching this movie for 24 years I can safely say that this film should be declared, in my opinion, one of the greatest horror movies of all time. To me it always will be.
