Independence Day Sequel

Special effects show well on Blu-Ray DVD.
Lots of action in a future world made possible by the first Independence Day story.
Captured weapons and anti-gravity technology make space travel easy.
Many of the actors are back 20 years later and are older. This enhances the new story.
Good movie.

ID2 - A Slighlty Critical Review by ILOVEMYBOXERPUPPY

I guess this was an entertaining sequel to the original. Guess what?....the aliens are back, and you didn't need anyone to tell you that. Alot of the original ensemble cast is in this movie. Humans on earth have learned some lessons from the original invasion but are put to the test again against a slightly different threat. Humankind is at peace on Earth, we've reverse engineered more of the alien technology, and a wormhole/artifact is found near the moon that signals incoming drama.

All the returning characters are placed accordingly into the not so distant future and even the new faces are introduced timely into their respective parts. The story arc keeps you interested in what will happened versus what happened in the previous movie. Guaranteed death, action, and destruction does happen during the 120 minute film that's actual 25 minutes shorter than ID1 this time around. The end of the movie eventually comes full circle to explain why we are being invaded again and even leads the audience to a possible 3rd movie.

I think Independence Day in general is a good franchise and concept. Back when the first 1996 movie came out it definitely was done blockbuster style. They went out on a limb blowing up the White House back then. Director Roland Emmerich has a visual and literal style that is different than say Michael Bay. I believe both directors operate in the same genre frequently, but one is definitely more "Hollywood" in making the major scenes of a film or even long dialogue takes. Both are capable of taking an epic "redux" concept such as Godzilla (Emmerich) or Transformers the Movie (Bay) and making the visual impact with special effects that matches the bill. Their films probably test well in screenings and evaluative audiences before they even hit the big screen.

Why did it take 20 years for a sequel? Rumors stated that the events of 9/11 would have put an early sequel in a bad light. So anything remotely regarding greenlighting production was put on hold. But why so long? The reception of ID1 was well noted from the box office to dvd sales to The Academy. Sometimes I think Roland Emmerich sees himself more as a screenwriter primarily, since he either writes or contributes to the screenplay on most of the films that he ends up directing. Maybe he stews on his thoughts, dialogues, and scenes longer than most when it comes to a blockbuster or potential trilogy. I say if you have a franchise or at least one in the making, you should go with it. Why not?...you're in the sci-fi action movie genre so start cranking them out. Roland also directed Stargate the movie and also left us hanging without a sequel til this day. It did develop into a television series and created a decent following. He might easily do the same with Independence Day and deliver timely sequels or spin-offs every 2 - 4 years. Wouldn't that make production costs more efficient since the actors still look like the characters appropriate age and the set design is still relatively usable for the next related film?

Rotten Tomatoes gave ID2 a 31% and film award nominations were scarce. I don't think having Will Smith in the movie would have made it rate any higher with the viewers. I'm more of a fan of J.J. Abrams or Ridley Scott's work so I would generally refer to you their films for the sci-fi action genre. I find they're work is more relate-able with more layers in the story, characters, and visuals. Yes, I said layers...All directors can tell a story and should be able to deliver on a high level with big budgets. I'm just looking for something that resonates with me and the sci-fi genre. The film medium could be such more. Maybe even art-like, giving us the delivery of a new classic or what films could be about in the future. Layers, concepts under the surface, visuals that iterate the next trends in culture, or how we think philosophically about ourselves moving forward into the next iteration of film. There's gotta be people on some of these film crews, DP's, or production designers that ask themselves - Is that what he did with the script and the budget? But who knows, they're probably all unionized set workers anyways.

Independence Day : Resurgence .

This sequel is good and ties-in well with the original ; sometimes the storyline is a bit muddy, but the action is good.
The new characters are sometimes hard to relate to the original . 20th Century should not have waited so long to produce it . Maybe that is why the characters and storyline are at times confusing . However, as stated ,the film is well done and entertaining .Read full review...

Plenty of Action

Not quite as good as the first one, but then what sequel is? Plenty of action, and the good guys, in this case the human race, win. Not without a cost, though.

Must See

Great movie. Great acting. Great CGI. Makes you wonder about the possibilities of a real alien invasion and whether we would survive an advanced alien race that wants Planet Earth!

Movies are entertaining, this one nailed it!

It's entertainment at it's finest. It kept me engaged and interested and yes, even excited throughout the movie. And isn't that exactly what medias of this nature are supposed to do?
