Instruments of Great Difficulty Starring Young Indy

Well this is a difficult game to get hold of! I live in the UK and had to buy it from America (and fast delivery might I add) because the game was never released in Europe. In Europe trying to find the game is a Holy Grail treasure hunt even Dr. Jones would be envious of. I wonder why considering anything with the Indiana Jones label is bound to sell trucks of games.

Having said that I'm as surprised as many that they made a game of the Young Indiana Jones TV show. I mean it wasn't exactly as action packed or as exciting as the films but that hasn't stopped the developers from giving it a try. At times you wonder whether they've actually watched the show. Young Indy fought in the war, met historical figures and fell in love with everything from women to saxaphones. Here he's leaping around like older Indy collecting artifacts as part of the Secret Service. Okay, hands up there was one story where he looked for a valuable artifact and he was known for working for the Secret Service but the game seems stuck between the style of the TV show and the films.

Indy has the option of using his gun to shoot at the bad guys but this seems pointless since first of all most enemies are animals that fly or sting and second the whip is so good it almost makes you forgive the game shortcomings. Unlike in previous Indy games where our hero just whips straight and that's it in this game the whip wiggles and shows actual gravity. You need to build up momentum in order to hit enemies with it and works really well on most villians. The graphics/sound and okay but from a game released in 1994 you kind of expect slightly better. The graphics in particular at times look 1992.

You can choose any stage you wish to play although it's worth noting some stages are more difficult than others and every stage is difficult! This is really what hurts an otherwise okayish game. It is way too hard! Flying bats hurt Indy, cog wheels send him to his death, spikes are normally everywhere and he even gets hit by lightning?! Completing one mission is a task in itself.

In all Instruments of Chaos is moderately entertaining but the high difficulty level just ruins it and undermines the stuff that works like the whip. Poor Indy. He might not want take this game to that warehouse from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I love most things Indy but this game is awful

The controls are so broken it is literally unplayable. It could've been good if that was fixed. Graphics are decent but only buy this game if you are collecting all the Indy games and in that case I'd say it's worth maybe $5.Read full review...
