Excellent work on the crux of behaviorism and psychoanalysis
This book is a landmark achievement at the intersection of two divergent strands of psychological thought in the early twentieth century. On the one hand there is social behaviorism, developed by George Herbert Mead and the empirical rigor of observation and physiological description of phenomena. On the other hand there is Sigmund Freud's drive theory and the description of psychological phenomena in terms of repressed or otherwise unconscious tensions. Harry Stack Sullivan bridges this gap by applying physiological descriptions to psychoanalytic concepts, producing a vector theory which captures both the dynamic and the goal oriented qualities of human thought and action. What's more, he continues both Mead's and Freud's trend of grounding his interpersonal theory of psychiatry in the development of the human organism from infancy, describing the dyadic relationship to the nursing "mother". I am only 100 pages in, but Sullivan's clear style and philosophical approach have deepened my knowledge of psychology and illuminated beliefs I've already held about my self, my relationships, and the clinical practice I intend to pursue. Get a quality edition for a Quality Content.
The product as both content and quality is to be bundled. The image displayed is th request for evaluation is EXCELLENT in both senses. However the diminutive low grade pulp paperback (Bantam paperback) does disservice to the superior content of Sullivvan's message. I would recommend a magnifying glass and careful handling of the book to be sure the pages do not fall out. I would recommend the book to anyone but suggest a quality manufacured edition. I will keep my pulpy paperback but will pack a magnifying glass for reading ion airplane flights.Read full review...
