'The Sublime Suggests'

'Reading other media about this flick doesn't support a ranking as sub-culture classique. But possibly that would be inconsistent with the whole theme. There are some clever twists, but the story pervades as yet another depiction of the mercurial rise to cultural icons of a previously unknown group of girl rockers.

The credibility may have been enhanced, had the actresses portraying the band members actually been three struggling musicians. But this seems to not be so. Other media-produced groups have had unknown musicians performing as actors; The Monkees and even Disney's ubiquitous Mousketeers. But if they are as photogenic as Britney Spears, they are still poseurs according to the term. Because they did not go further with their musical careers. Their acting, though, did carry over to produce further television programs and the usual plethora of promotional products. So net results would have to be considered as having been a success for the producers.

But considering the effort from the purely cinematographic perspective, the themes of subliminal suggestion, pre-fabricated stardom and conspicuous consumption are presented to the audience quite indelicately. And though that may cleverly be construed to be a part of the insidious character of the theme, they don't evoke a genuine feeling of artiness. Subsequently, the whole mood results as being a self-consciousness, a sort of stage-fright that perhaps nobody completely recovers from.

As the 2-dimensional mock-ups at a supposed TRL studio taping are phoney and depthless, that similar wave of suggestion actually could lead an audience to believe that the whole film was a sham, a mere fraud and a fake. So some sort of credibility would have benefited the movie as a cinematographic effort. There could have been some intimacy with the girls; not exactly pornographic or salacious, as this was supposedly being directed at a young audience, but some sort of a depiction of emotional depth that could have equated with their ages. There are certain innuendoes to that; for example when they have retreated to the bathroom, with their agent guy behind, and a member of The Pussycats asks if Anybody Has Change For A Tampax, or when the agent's sister quips, So You Slept With Him, to Josie. Thus, there's the germ of the idea, but the disappointment arises that possibly you ARE actually being brain-washed and considering so, shouldn't consider any of the aforesaid as having been bona fide.

This deleterious manipulation of the sub-conscious on the part of the director could again possibly be ignored, except for the very obstreporous use of some real graphic components of advertising. Logos of Starbucks, Ford and Pepsi are presented clearly, blatantly and overtly. They could have been substituted for fictional graphics; Kaffeino Koffee, Acme Auto Company and Blappo Cola could have easily been used to keep the mood of the movie on an evocative side, as that would actually have been the better way to depict the insidious vein of this sort of subliminal programming.

Perhaps the sheer speciousness of the mental programmers spells the collapse of their Scheme-For-Complete-Control that they must relinquish to the fairy-tale climax of Josie and her buffoon-roadie remaining true to each other. There are no other alternatives, and as you are thinking that you have actually been brain-washed, you are subsequently bombarded with the pulchritude of the Victoria's Secret billboard advert.'

Good price, shipped 3 days after order was canceled.

I canceled the order 5 minutes after I placed it. 3 DAYS later it was shipped and I was told that the order couldn't be canceled because it shipped. I think 3 days was enough time to click a button and cancel it. Also, the DVD came with what appeared to be food smudged onto the DVD. However, the price of the DVD was a good price, I just didn't need two of them which is why I tried to cancel the order. I was able to buy it new for just $1.50 more on another site.Read full review...

Better than you'd expect

I thought this would be some vapid, bubble-gum, half-baked attempt to cash in on the Archie franchise. Boy was I surprised.

This film is a biting socio-political commentary on the vapid, bubble-gum, half-baked music industry that makes and breaks bands on a whim AND on the irritating advertising industry that puts their grubby fingerprints on everything in sight. There are many hilarious moments that I enjoy seeing again and again.

That's why I searched out this DVD, I had to have this in my movie collection!

Funny

This movie was by far in my opinion the best movie to come out of 2001! It was unfortunately overshadowed by the Sept 11 events. The copious conspicuous product placement is totally out of this world! Read full review...
