Audio Books - The Patricia Cornwell Treasury

I started listening to audio books on cassette about 13 years ago when I had a 140-mile round-trip drive to and from work. Since the bulk of my ride was on Interstate highways and I had cruise control, listening to books on tape really did not interfere with my driving.

I recently had a CD player installed and unfortunately did not consider the possibility of putting in an MP3 player for only $10 more. So – I have to rely on what few books on CD our library in Naples, Italy offers.

I started looking for audio books on CD on eBay and I have always been a fan of Patricia Cornwell and her main character, Dr. Kay. It is enjoyable to listen to or read about a character that you are already familiar with.

When I started to listen to books on cassettes, a friend asked if it wasn't like being read to. I replied that it was EXACTLY like being read to, and if the reader wasn't good at it, 15 or 20 minutes would pass by and I would not have heard a word. Initially, the audio had only one reader. If there were multiple parts, the reader tried to change his/her voice. If there were multiple genders, the voice would go higher or lower depending on who the character was. Kind of silly if you think about it. I mean – if the producers needed a female voice, couldn't they have asked a staff member to read and offer her $500?

These days, several voices are used, as are sound effects. If done properly, it is a modern technical version of an old-time radio show.

I realize that many families have DVD players in the car for long trips to keep the children entertained. I suggest some audio books as an alternative. Books, even ones that are read to you, force the listener to "imagine" and to "think" – something that movies don't always do.

If you've never tried books on tape or CD (or MP3 like the one I should have bought!) go to your local library and try one out free. Then if you enjoy them as much as I do, go to EBAY and find your favorite.

PS – the seller is great!

Ciao

The Patricia Cornwell Audio Treasury

I've read most of P. Cornwell's books and thought I would enjoy being read to. This 5 CD set includes an abridged reading of both "Cruel and Unusual" and "All That Remains", both from the Scarpetta series. I found the audio abridged versions enjoyable, but missing the anticipation and some of the empathy of the read it yourself unabridged.
I found both stories suspenseful, but without the depth of character development that I really enjoy about Cornwell's writing.
This is very good for a quick mystery. Maybe for the long drive or to help you go to sleep at night.
Too bad some things have to be sacrificed to abridge.

Patricia Cornwell on audio

This is the first time I bought an audio book. I travel upto an hour to get to work and decided to listen to a book during my travels instead of flipping through the radio. I have never read a Patricia Cornwell book before but heard she was a good writer. So, I decided to purchase the audio books. I choose this particular audio based on the titles as well as the fact that two books were on one. I find myself anxious to get back into my car to finish the rest of the book because the nararator keeps it interesting. I will certainly purchase more audio books in the near future.Read full review...

The Patricia

I love the heroine, Dr. Scarpetta the medical examiner. Her job is to discover the cause of death of several of the victims. Also the Lifetime channel is going to present Patricia Cornwall mysteries over the next couple of weeks. I am looking forward to that. When you read or listen to a mystery your imagination pictures the characters. I am anxious to see how these characters will be portrayed on TV.Read full review...

Set of audio mysteries

Patricia Cornwell is a master of suspense. I especially enjoy the audio versions, and this purchase was a great value. Not for the faint of heart!
