The Name of the Wind

I NEVER reread books. Can't stand to do it. The two exceptions in my 43 years thus far has been The Lord of the Rings and The Name of the Wind. And I loved TNotW even more the second time.

This book is very well written, wry in parts, touching at the right moments. Lots of adventure and magic and music. You'll fall in love with Kvothe. (And Bast, never forget BAST!) This book has brought me back to my love of fantasy literature. Better than GRR Martin. Better than JJR Tolkien (Yes. I said it!) You will not be disappointed.

OK, yes you will. Because unfortunately book 2, The Wise Man's Fear, doesn't come out until around March 2011. How will you ever make it to wait that long? And then you'll have to wait again for book three. But the anticipation is well worth it.

You will want to buy two copies so that you can lend one out when you start telling people how great this is. Or better yet make everyone buy their own. Support Rothfuss so he has more time to write!

I enjoyed this.

If you haven't read this book you need to buy it and read it right now. Stop reading this and read it. If you did buy the book and are now waiting for it to arrive you should go to sleep and the book will arrive faster. Or get really drunk. Really, really drunk! So drunk that you do things that you don't remember. You may lose friends or alienate that girl/guy you like but let's be honest... you didn't have much of a shot anyways. Do these things and all of a sudden you can start enjoying this fine novel. Also, if you take the drinking path there is a very good chance that you will have lots of free time. Now to describe what you will find in The Name of the Wind. But how do you describe something this great? How do you describe a rainbow? How do you describe love? Probably with words like refraction, dopamine, or serotonin. These words can probably be used to describe this work but I don't completely understand them so I won't use them. This book is best described as the opposite of crap. It is in fact anti-crap. When the universe was formed, and crap was created, this book was expelled violently in the opposite direction of all crap. Because of this, it is theorized that if the book should ever come into contact with crap a series of explosions could occur that would devastate all life on this planet. (Be wary of this if reading in the bathroom.) So, in summation:

Step 1. Buy The Name of the Wind.
Step 2. Read The Name of the Wind.
Step 3. Get the girl. (At this point I know it is a guy reading this review because a girl would have had the good sense to ignore it.)

Lastly. I do actually understand refraction fairly well but it didn't seem like the right place to go into it.

An Amazing Find & Read

This book was one of the greatest books I've read in quite a while. The author has a power to make you feel right there with the character and the tale he's spun is as real as day & night. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to try something familiar (the fantasy genre) with a new author (Patrick Rothfuss) or try something new. This book was fantastic and I rank it among my favorites, not only because of the good plot, but also because of the way Rothfuss can make the reader feel. Emotion, wit, humor, regret, sadness... there are many emotions and feelings that come with this book. Do yourself a favor and read it.Read full review...

Minuscle details

The book itself is not in prestine condition. I'd give it a 9/10 if I could just because of tiny little details (perhaps it wasn't handled well during its shipment). Nevertheless, the package arrived when it said it would and it seems to be new.

About the content of the book there is nothing to be said appart from that it is a masterpiece. This book is a must read for any fantasy reader, and even if you aren't.

Name of the Wind

I bought this book for my husband for his birthday after reading some reviews of it online. Some of my favorite writers, like Robin Hobb, were thrilled with this first book for this new writer. Its a first book in a trilogy, and my husband said it definately got his attention. He devoured the book in about five days. He told me it was an excellent read with a good story line, and he is eagerly awaiting the release of part two and three. I would be reading it myself right now, except it caught my Father's eye, and he beat me to the punch. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the style of Robin Hobb or George R.R. Martin.Read full review...

Something for everyone

A great entry into fantasy for those who are new to the genre. Rothfuss' writing is compelling, while being simplistic so it's very easy to read.
