From Creepy to Campy

When I was about eleven years old, I thought Kolchak: The Night Stalker was just about the scariest show on TV and I loved it. Looking at it through adult eyes, it seems a bit more campy than creepy, but it's still well done for what it is. Darren McGavin always managed to play the titular character right up to—but never quite over—the top. I know what I'm watching Halloween night!

This Universal-branded reissue DVD set has one big difference from the original MGM-branded set in that it is on five single-sided discs, whereas the original was on three discs, one single-sided and two double-sided 'flippy discs'. I have had more than one flippy disc fail over the years and was glad to have an option.

Oldie but Goodie 👍

If you enjoy the old, pure and genuine TV shows for the 70’s this one is at the top of the list. Darren McGavin was awesome in his role as the fearless news reporter famously know as The Night Stalker. Clean scary entertainment at its very best...Read full review...

Darren McGavin made Night Stalker

Grew up watching this series with my mom in the late 70s. Still enjoyed & loved it as I got older. Darren McGavin plays Kolchak who is such a fascinating character, as is his boss Tony Vincenzo, and his other office workers. Especially the sweet Mrs Emily. The soundtrack to the show also was very well done. It really adds to the creepiness, and suspense. Kudos to the work that was put into this series. I only wish it could have kept going. The creator of The X-Files was also a fan of this show which inspired him to create the hit show The X-Files. Fox Mulder is very much like Kolchak. Always after the truth. Even if it kills him. My only complaint about the DVD set is the the movie: The Night Stalker movie (that started it all) and The Night Strangler are not part of the set. But instead sold separately. If they had been included I'd have been even happier. However, to own this set is a dream come true. The stories are fun, kinda scary when you're a kid growing up watching these like I did. However the characters are well fleshed out and the actors of the time were great. Something I can't say much for on today's tv. The show didn't have to go over the top with special effects or elaborate gimmicks. Sometimes a little cheesy some may quibble, however it's the good cheese you enjoy. This show had a lot of heart and spirit. The remake of this show in the late 2000s was so bad they cancelled it. Goes to show you can't remake something that was already perfect.Read full review...

wonderful show, too bad it only went 1 season.

This is 70's TV at its best. Good writing, good plots, good acting, interesting guest stars, and who doesn't love a vintage yellow convertible mustang?

A real must have

I saw this for sale and remembered this show from the ‘70s. I remembered how much I loved the show and knew I needed this boxset in the collection. The entire series was awesome, but short lived. The two movies they did of the same character are not included but this set is a must have. Read full review...

Excellent

As a child of the 70s I just enjoyed the nostalgia and all the great character actors so familiar in other films and TV shows. The supernatural element is enjoyable.

Late night, 1970s pioneer of mystery, science fiction and horror

Nostalgia is a funny thing. I never missed this show when it first aired in the evenings of the mid 1970s, seeing it again brought me right back to those times. Actor Darren McGavin is excellent in this role and I humbly feel this program was a pre cursor to shows like X-Files and such. Full of humor and mystery the show will make you laugh and thrill you from moment to moment. It may be or seem a bit tame for today’s jaded audience but none the less this is a historical program that should be enjoyed and seen if you like mystery, science fiction and horror. Great packaging of the complete two seasons minus the two made for TV movies that kicked off the show ( The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, both also available on dvd). Highly recommended if only to re live those evenings in the mid seventies watching an unusual show about the unusual and paranormal.Read full review...

A golden oldie of Scii-Fi

Very enjoyable to watch again after almost 50 years. The special effects are still generally good although they do not compare to those of today. Very good cast of regulars and guest stars,
It is far superior to the remake that aired a few years ago.Read full review...

Another golden oldy

+I just love it. The DVD's arrived quickly and well wrapped. +I can watch the Night Stalker one after the other with no commercials. This is an old series but it still stands up. Back then a season consisted of many episodes. Darrin Mc Gavin is a great actor who could make anything believable. I love seeing all the stars before they were stars in these shows. This is really a good buy especially for the quality and priceRead full review...

"THE STALKER RETURNS!"

In the mid-1970's "The Night Stalker" was shown as a T.V. Movie Of The Week kind of one time Special. It earned huge ratings and spawned "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" about a reporter on the hunt for stalkers, monsters, strange unexplained deaths. A highlight of the decade, it only lasted one season. T.V. executives said it was too intense for younger viewers! My, how times have changed. The series has a Cult following for good reason-it inspired "The X-Files" decades later! If you love chilling mysteries, this is for you, brave believers!Read full review...
