Decent

It's a good lens however it is noticeably soft wide open at f4. Definitely better results if you choke it down a bit so I'd be hesitant on using this lens during low light situations regardless of your camera's high ISO capabilities.

Daytime in moderately good lighting, you get really sharp results around f5.6 to 8 at all focal ranges.

Great, compact lens with super macro capability

I have bought and sold more copies of this lens than I care to admit over the years. I just can't do without one! I really takes tack sharp photos with the pleasing "Minolta colors". I am not one to spend time in post-processing, so the old Minolta glass renders natural colors right out of the camera. Plus, the focal length is ideal for both APSC and full frame digital cameras. Macro shots are great, and nice bonus. This is a small, light weight lens worth adding to your kit. And, you can get one for a song!Read full review...

Minolta lens for a Sony camera

This lens is a great all around lens for scenic views, to macro close ups. The Fstop is great for making the object the focal point of the picture.

EXCELLENT LENS

Like it's big brother (the legendary 70-210 Beercan) this "Baby Beercan" 35-70 is a constant f4 zoom that delivers outstanding picture quality with a small frame. You can usually find them for $100 or less- with Macro, incredible build quality and compact size, this really is a wonderful lens to add to your camera bag.

I have owned and used up one (meaning it had a fatal accident because it's owner dropped it onto a sidewalk), have bought one for my best friend, and now own another for myself. I consider it an essential part of my Sony SLT-a77 outfit, and will not ever be without one!

Minolta AF Maxxum 35-70mm f/4 Macro Zoom Lens w. Metal Mount for Sony Alpha

Very good value, sharp lens with a constant f4 aperture, I have not used the macro option so I can't comment on that, however, 70mm is not really the optimum macro distance in my opinion, don't get it if that is all you want it for.

For a all around walk around lens on a full frame lens it is better that kit lens you can get on your camera today,

Great walk around lens, especially for full frame Sony cameras

This lens was manufactured in the 80's and introduced initially with the first autofocus camera, the Minolta Maxxum 7000. I purchased two of these lenses for my Sony Alpha 850 and for my Maxxum 7000. The quality is unbeatable for the price. Its an extremely sharp lens with little distortion even on a full frame digital camera such as the A850. The colors from this lens are just lovely. Built quality is excellent. For the price, there is nothing to dislike about this lens except maybe the slow f4 aperture. It has a macro button which can be quite useful for close-up shots. Optical quality compares very favorably with my Minolta Maxxum 50mm 1.7 lens and is even better than many more expensive lenses.Read full review...

Maxxum AF 35-70mm f/4 Lens

These Maxxum f/4 lenses are some of the best you can get. The glass is better than todays Sony Lenses.
But it really depends on what you want the lens for, or what type of photography do you want to do with it.
If you're after close-ups of flowers and bugs and tiny things, then the MACRO f/2.8 lenses might serve your purpose better.
But if you're wanting to bring distant objects into a closer view, then the f/4 Maxxum 'beercan' lenses cannot be beat.

The King of budget mini telelenses;the little engine that can...in spades!

I took a few snap shots the next morning after I had received the lens; of sunlight filtering through fog and mist thru tree branches. The sharpness and immediacy of the colors and contrasts caught me off guard. Best sharpness occurs around F8 to f10 or so in all focal lengths and the AF from f4 to f9 is quick and responsive. The macro of course uses manual focus though I understand there is a "scotch tape" fix that "restores" AF for macro. As for Macro focus, it does an reasonable "magnifying" job in mudane on the go situations but don't expect to image the individual parts of a butterfly in fine granular detail with it.Read full review...

mr bruce wayne

my name is law oak. i shoot a Sony a330 10.2mp camera. this Minolta 35-70mm f4 macro lens is now my primary lens on this camera. it is tack. edge to edge-this lens retains optical integrity. for purveyors of Sony alpha cameras(esp in 3/4 format), Minolta lenses are a wonderful compliment to a system. the high standards of response that Mr. Wayne maintained this lens can not be overstated. I am very pleased of the photos i have taken, thank you....law oakRead full review...
