Do-it-yourself assembly a plus; taps into 7 & 8 year old intrigue with mazes

My 5 year old and 8 year old grandsons played this after a rock climbing camp they took this summer in a room children waited to be picked up. They really enjoyed playing the game, so I bought it. You need to put the maze and the die together which they were able to do by using the templates and looking at the step by step instructions. We made a mistake and learned we had to look at the directions carefully and were able to correct it. If my older grandson is typical, children are really into mazes at age 7 and 8, and love doing mazes and making their own. Playing the game is more up to chance/luck. There is limited use of creativity in the actual playing of the game.

I looked for the Greek story of the Minotaur and the eight year old and I read it together so that he understood where the game came from. I think including the story in the game would be a valuable addition. My favorite is the version called "Theseus and the Minotaur" that is in comic book like format in the book Greek Myths by Marcia Williams. Early readers and established readers alike would enjoy it, learn about classical Greek myth/literature, gain a better understanding of the game, and maybe enjoy recreating the story in creative free play with the pieces.Read full review
