stay away from LG DVD recorders

LG makes some nice products, such as DVD recorders, etc., but they don't hold up over time..... I bought this RC 199H used on EBay that was stated to be not working.... everything did work, except for the DVD drive. I paid a very low
price for this unit and decided to try and fix it. Found a replacement DVD drive on EBay for a reasonable amount, the new drive worked for a week before
it crapped out. This is the third LG DVD recorder I've had with DVD drive problems.... so my overall opinion is obviously biased.
When the RC 199H works, it works very well, it has a very easy interface or
Menu to navigate. A nice analog tuner, adequated inputs and outputs, plus HDMI
output. The picture is nice and clear, no complaints. The VHS portion of this
machine works well, as does the remote control.
Two things about this machine I can do without.... it has a Copy Protection
circuit, i.e., certain channels from your cable box will not record. The work-around is to insert a Video Stabilizer of some kind, to defeat the copy protection signals. This applies to cable TV and some broadcast channels like
CBS HD.
When setting timers, they cannot overlap, or you'll get an error message.
If you want to set two consecutive timers, let's say from 8 to 9 p.m., and
from 9 to 10 p.m., the first timer must be set for 59 minutes, or else the machine will not record the second timer.
Overall the LG RC199H is pretty easy to operate, if the DVD drives were more
reliable, I'd give it a much higher rating.

DVD recorder vcr

Having a hard time getting dvds to play and some won't play. When you first put a DVD in it takes a long time to read before it starts to play, or it will not work at all. I haven't tried dubbing yet, hope that works.Read full review...

LG RC199H DVD Recorder / VCR Combo

This is a very nice looking unit. The ease of use is fairly simple. It also has the built in tuner. The picture quality thru the tuner of this unit is awesome. The dubbing feature is very easy to use. The recording quality on a dvd recorder is excellent. So far the DVD player has played back all but one of my store bought DVD's. The users manual says it will use all formats of blank dvd's but it will not use any of the lesser expensive -R or -RW formats. The +R and +RW of any brand seem to work great. I read somewhere that it will use the -R and -RW but it must the the high-end brand of which I have not purchased to try. Just save yourself any grief and stay with the +R or +RW and you will be very satisfied. Overall I would recommend this to anyone wanting a very good DVD-VCR combo with two way dubbing.Read full review...

LG RC 199H

I have two of these recorders and have not had any problems with either one.
They do seem to work better with DVD+R than the DVD-R.
You do have to format the +R, but it only takes about one minute.
I like the way the recorder works. For example, everytime you hit the
record button, it only increases the recording time by 10 minutes. This is
a great feature, especially if you are going to "dub" VCR tapes and want to
put two tapes on one DVD. You of course, would have to use the 4 hour recording mode. (i.e. LP) The LP mode is good enough for VCR tapes. Also by having two of these machines, I can use S-video out and in connections to dub the DVD's.

LG-RC199H DVD Recorder. May or May not work!

Unit will read some DVD's, not all and it doesn't matter if it is a factory made DVD or a copied one. This recorder takes longer than average to recognize DVD's. Unit well designed, has some good features, example: up-convert to 1080i, has built in tuner( maybe useless after Feb 2009) I bought this unit because of it's styling and features.Read full review...

I love the LG and would have paid the repair sop $200 to fix it..

I have a LG RC199H DVD/VCR combo recorder and literally used it thousands of times since 2006. The VCR started eating up tapes. I took it in for repairs and they charged me $50 and told me I needed a tape deck and it was not available anymore. I shopped around but couldn't find another recorder like it. Finally it dawned on me to try ebay. I found a few and bid on a couple but my bids weren't accepted. I bid on the cheapest on that was being sold for parts and won the bid. They were probably happy to get rid of it. The DVD portion did not work at all but the VCR worked fine. Playing and recording was great. I replace the DVD part with the one from my set. I put my front and cover on it and it works like new and looks like new. I am very happy with the deal I made.Read full review...

Good consumer unit

As a piece of consumer gear the unit is well made. Feature-wise it is a great design and easy to use. Not enough experience to rate its reliability.

Interesting piece of junk

Interesting comment "deneban" about the people that complain about this product and their inability to appreciate all of the technological feats that it can perform - because you are right. I can't appreciate all of the features of my RC199H because it doesn't work! Stopped reconizing discs 1 week after the warranty expired - now that is product lifecycle engineering that can't be matched. When I contacted LG and Best Buy they both asked if I got good use from it during the 1 year warranty. If you enjoy owning devices that are the very best there is - on paper, then buy one of these! Matter of fact, would you like mine!Read full review...
