Roy Clarke, a true comic genius

This 2 disc set is like a sliver of your favorite cake... it leaves you wanting more.

Part of the world's longest running comedy TV show, 31 Series over 37 years, it's practically impossible to opine about this program in such a way that any new information is conveyed. That might sound odd about a TV show you may have never seen before, but it's true and perhaps even harder to believe when you consider that the episodes on this pair of DVDs are but a few of the 295 total produced over the years.

This and other product descriptions aptly paint word pictures which set the stage for yet another installment of adventures with three senior citizens named Clegg, Compo and Foggy, seniors who refuse to grow up, but not until you become immersed in the village where they live (a village which is surrounded by fantastic natural picturesque backdrops all along its perimeter) can you begin to appreciate the genius of creator / writer Roy Clarke and his brand of storytelling.

Once you become acclimated with the 3 lead characters and supporting cast you can randomly dip in and out of their shenanigans without missing a beat because nearly all episodes are standalone stories. A common thread-worn trope of modern TV where characters are in similar if not the same predicaments over and over again, that's nowhere to be found in this show... that's what makes Last of the Summer Wine so much fun to watch, its situations are not only funny, but very down to earth.

A sitcom doesn't accidentally run for 3 dozen years. More to the point, Roy Clarke wrote the entire run, no mean feat by today's television standards. It also means his knowledge of each character is unrivaled. Not even the actors who portray those characters know them as well as Roy however each actor so embodies their on screen persona you'll forget you're watching a work of fiction. While some characters come and go, there's a staying power to the cast and production crew which makes Last of the Summer Wine a better than safe bet at any point along its 30+ series.

You'll find I've submitted this same review, word for word, about this and other Last of the Summer Wine DVD releases, not because I'm lazy, but because the Internet already offers volumes of information about the show, including scripts. I don't like my favorite TV shows spoiled before I watch them, even if they are already decades old, which is why I'm not divulging any details about specific episodes.

This is comfort food feel good comedy at its best.

Great DVD!

I really enjoy this series, especially when it is the trio of Comp, Clegg and Dewhurst!
This particular dvd (1982-1983) is especially engaging.

Longest running SITCOM in history and well deserved.

Just pure entertainment, no Hollywood social engineering messages. If you are not familiar with these shows, buy one and see how you like it. Don't laugh too long or you will surely miss two jokes that follow. I plan on buying the whole set.

Fantastic show. Hilarious antics.

I never get tired of my favorite old men. Compo, Clegg and Foggy were the funniest men on TV. There is no doubt why this show lasted so many years.

Great English comedy

Both my wife and I enjoyed it so much I purchased the series that the local TV station didn't show.
