A tool you hate to love

I always hate it when you have to purchase a tool to recover from the ineptitude of engineers. In this case the ineptitude comes in two flavors; the Ford engineers who designed the plug/head clearance that collects carbon deposits, and the spark plug engineers who designed the plug with a swaged instead of welded connection to the plug tip. However, I love it when a tool is designed well and does its job efficiently and the 65600 plug removal tool is just that.
I was forced to remove six of the eight plug tips with this tool and it performed flawlessly. This is a "must have" for anyone who owns one of these engines.

Got the job done but was very disappointed with the quality.

The tool worked great but even after removing just one broken plug, the threads on the puller stripped off in the middle leaving one good thread on at the start and end to do all the work. Did not appear to be heat treated properly. Just held my breath taking out the next six and had one plug that did not break.
The instructions state that the puller is not warranted and to buy another to replace the defective one cost $25.

a must have tool

Wow, what a tool. This tool makes a bad day actually pretty productive. If you own a 05-10 Ford 3v engine and do your own mechanic work this tool is absolutely needed. I followed the Ford Technical recommendation to crack the plugs 1/4 turn, soak them overnight with solvent and still broke 2 plugs. So I had to do some research to see what I needed to do to get the spark plug base out of the heads. Research indicated that the Lisle tool is very good at extracting the broken piece and also very easy to use. So I ordered one from ebay. Today I pulled both spark plug bases and the tool worked remarkably well. I do not believe there is a better design or tool out there. There are many examples of spark plug tool extractors and this one works great, and is very easy to use and the price isn't too bad. Ebay is full of used Lisle 65600 tools as this tool used once is likely the only time you would ever need it as the new plugs are of a better design and most of us install them with anti-seize paste so broken plugs are unlikely during the next plug change.
I have used Lisle tools throughout my 50 years of being a shade tree mechanic. All worked very well. I would highly, highly recommend this tool, it saves your day.

Broken Spark Plug, 5.4 Triton

Lisle Spark Plug Removal tool worked great. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Broken plug removed in about 15 minutes. Don't pay high price of a dealer or shop. Wouldn't recommend attempting spark plug removal without this tool.Read full review...

One stop tool to end the spark plug nightmare!!

This is the only tool that you need to get those stubborn broken spark plugs out. Lesson learned after renting several other tools that made it worse. Also YouTube has great videos to show you how to use the Lisle spark plug remover.Read full review...

Got me out of a jam.

My truck was missing under light load and I thought it might be the spark plugs. Being a mechanic for over 30 years I figured that there wouldn't be any problem getting to the plugs. First one came out ok second one loosened up but would not come out, third one loosened up but would not come out and the fourth one came rite out. I pushed a rubber hose around the second and third plugs and retrieved the top of the plugs leaving the shroud section in the cylinder head. After looking through several you-tube videos I found this tool to be the most efficient for the issue at hand. The tool promptly removed the broken parts. I also learned that you need to warm the engine before removing these plugs. So I replaced the first 4 plugs and warmed the engine before trying the other 4. I also used a 1/2" impact turned down to a low setting to remove the last 4 without any issues. This is a very poor design for ford an in all my years of mechanical work this has been the most challenging thing I have run across other than an occasional broken bolt. I was always taught never to use an impact on spark plugs. Add a new chapter to that book.Read full review...

Simple Design, and a great tool.

It out-performed the OEM rental tool hands down. Removed 6 broken and seized spark plugs with the Lisle tool in 2 1/2 hours. I tried for 6 hours with the OEM tool and didn’t get the first plug out! The OEM tool uses pull pins and locktite to try and pull the remaining porcelain tip out of the electrode sleeve so that you can then tap the electrode sleeve, and then use their extractor tool to pull the steel sleeve out. The locktite isn’t strong enough to hold the pull pin. The Lisle tool pushes the porcelain tip out of the way so that the Lisle ez out can grasp the remaining steel sleeve and pull it out! Much simpler, and more effective. Graet tool!Read full review...

Got the job done!

I wouldn’t wanna try any tool but this one. It works great easy to understand when your hands are on it and is a lot better than trying to pull it out some other way and then having to pull the head. I had three broken plugs and had them all removed in 30 minutes! If you are a do it yourself kinda guy who doesn’t own many tools I’d recommend buying visegrip pliers to grip the electrode to unscrew the tool out of it. Read full review...

Awesome product!!

I got exactly what I ordered. The price beat what the local parts stores offered, and it was in stock to boot. Worked exactly like it was supposed to. I was finished within 10 minutes of beginning the removal process. Worth way more than I paid. Thank you!Read full review...

How to fix an engineering mistake

Sad that the engineers who designed the engine for Ford and the spark plug for Autolite created a situation where a tool like this is necessary, but at least the spark plug remover does its job, provided you follow the instructions almost exactly.
The only thing I would recommend is not to screw the first part of the tool until it bottoms, because that breaks the metal tip off the spark plug and drops it into the cylinder. Even that tiny piece of metal can be disastrous! After the first one, I stopped pushing the ceramic into the tip about one turn before it bottomed, by counting the turns and checking the length of the exposed part of the tool.
Kudos to Lisle for coming up with this tool.
