Dylan in 2000-02 Oscar & Grammy: Better This Century?

If, when you first hear the new Bob Dylan, the man who won an Oscar for the theme song of "Wonder Boys," "Things Have Changed," you think he's no longer politically left in his music . . . better listen harder. He's just better at singing "up" to a more savvy, older, wiser listener. He's no longer singing easy listening folk music for hippies to rally by in the 1960's. If that's where you think Bob Dylan's music stayed, tune in to this century's master musician.

Dylan's life & music consistently defy what people expect. (Winning both an Oscar & a Grammy back to back, for example, after years of being a folk singing icon, if not, an American legend to several generations). Dylan is fired up & romantic in "Love and Theft." He composes & performs an unexpected jamming out, fast paced, word-packed, bar-band blues. Then, switches on a dime into love ballads of a 1930's crooner. But Dylan's voice isn't like Bing Crosby's: smooth. He's got that famous whiskey throat which makes the ballads sound all the more rare, especially in his unique style of phrasing.

This is the new Dylan who's been around the US streets, blocks, and barns! Here are the songs on "Love and Theft":

1. Tweedle Dee And Tweedle Dum
2. Mississippi
3. Summer Days
4. Bye And Bye
5. Lonesome Day Blues
6. Floater (Too Much To Ask)
7. Highwater
8. Moonlight
9. Honest With Me
10.Po' Boy
11.Cry Awhile
12.Sugar Baby

Though I listen to "Love and Theft" over & over again, I'm convinced that I'll never get all of Dylan's words & phrasing from this CD down pat. He's really showing off his lyrical mastery. How he fits all those words into each line, makes each one clear & stays on rhythm is quite remarkable & extra entertaining. His imagination works overtime!

This fast-paced, up beat & yet also crooning romantic mix & collection won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2002. It's no wonder at all! (A hybrid Super Audio CD means it plays on both regular & Super Audio CD players.

SACD farce

The quality of the audio is fine, but whoever mixed the surround sound did not have a clue what he was supposed to do. I bought it because it was affordable, and it is a welcome addition to my library, but as far as helping me create a library of SACD surround sound discs, it is a failure. I said it was not a good value because I would not have spent the money if I had known the SS is a dismal disappointment.Read full review...

SACD recording quality

Nice album, and the SACD recordings quality is better than what I expected after reading negative comments about it. It’s not super, but I’ve heard much worse. It is pretty good.
