Great game with a great story

This game is nearly perfect...awesome game play, gripping storyline, and some nice graphics. The game is basically however long you want it to be. If you want to be it in 15 hours, just play the main quest. If you want the game to draw out for a good 60+ hours, do every single side quest. Either way, the game is great.

My only complaint is that often times in the game there would be some frame rate issues, causing Mass Effect to run a little slower than one would want it to.

Its still an enjoyable game, just it would have been a great rather than good one if it weren't for its frame rate problems.

It's Truly Amazing!!

I didn't want to give this game a try for some reason. I just thought that everyone was giving it all hype for no reason.

And the first two hours made me feel the exact same way.

If you're a Completionist--like I am--you're going to want to do every side quest, talk to everyone you need to, get all the best armor, ect. to transfer into either a New Game or the Sequel. You'll first have to learn the "feel" of the game though.

It took me around two hours to do that. I was getting frustrated due to inventory list and not having enough powerful weapons/armor to keep from dying. I didn't upgrade fast enough to decode locked containers or didn't have high enough charisma to "persuade" people to see me view. But that changes after awhile.

Suffice to say---this game took my breath away. Seriously. I nearly cried because of how amazing it was. The plot thickens and twists in ways that pluck at your heartstrings. Some of the dialogue is comical and the romance choices are interesting.

The battle system was simple to grasp imo. The simplest thing truly. I don't understand why people dislike it...but I'm starting Mass Effect 2 after this review so I shall see.

The music was entertaining, especially the elevator music (it made me laugh). I would have liked to see more dialogue between the characters--they tend to only speak to each other in the elevators instead of when traveling around like Dragon Age. But I guess it makes sense that there's no reason to talk if you're under constant threat.

There's side quests to keep you occupied, all with interesting stories and variations. There are plenty of planets with different terrains that you can visit with an in-depth explanation of each--nice touch, Bioware.

My only true complaint about this game? Recycled areas. Especially in the side quests. After about doing 5 of them, you'll know where the important piece of your quest is...it's not a challenge.

Other than that, I have to say that this game is DEFINITELY my favorite game. It has even superseded Zelda: The Twilight Princess. Although my replay-ability for video-games is low--I tend to pass/beat them and then move on to the next unless if I am nostalgic--the amount of decisions that could have made everything go differently here makes me almost sure that I'm going to play it again in the future. Almost every decision has an influence, even if it's subtle.

It's an American RPG that I am glad to have picked up. Please continue with more amazing sagas like this, Bioware.

Mass Effect, the sci-fi fans wet dream.

Mass Effect is a few years old by now, bought the game to catch up in the trilogy. Very similar to Knights of the Old Republic, not a suprise being made by the same company. Although similar, it is it's own game entirely. A complete and compelling new universe to me. The game is very well done and it has a depth of well versed material. It really makes you feal like this sci-fi fantasy exists. The gameplay is also entertaining so far, although I haven't played the game through. I'm confidant in the beginning, this is a very well done game. If your looking for a sci-fi rpg, look no further than Mass Effect.Read full review...

Storyline Game, Sandbox Storyline Game

Mass Effect is a storyline game, from the very beginning you create your character, male or female, choice of background.
In this game, there is a lot of dialogue, mission and side mission objectives. If your familar with the "Longest Journey" game, its similar. If you like a good story and good even pace this is a great choice.

However if your looking for achievements, the achievements are far, wide and distantly in-between. I usually play a game in six hours or so and rack up a lot achievement points but this game, Ive been playing it for a while and only got 2 but thats not my concern, it has a large map to explore in. Right now, Im doing a lot of side missions sniffing around for boo-coo karma xp points and right now Im more of a Renegade than a Paragon.

Storyline game, mellow change of pace and there is a lot of dialogue. It has a lot of shooter elements in it but overall its a storyline game, just know that before you buy it and you wont be disappointed.

Great game, who knew the story could top the action?

Mass Effect is a great game that is similar in gameplay to many action RPGs. Many action RPGs are either action games with a bit more story or RPGs with a halfway functional character control. Mass Effect sets itself apart with an engrossing story AND top notch 3rd person shooter action. The story of Mass Effect is set in a future where humans have connected with a United-Nations-in-Space type organization and have been involved long enough to begin to earn respect. You are a naval commander who is charged with determining what is happening with a rogue special-ops alien. The backstory is as deep as the Star Wars universe, and your innumerable conversations with characters across the Milky Way Galaxy allow you to dig deeply into it. These conversations are the real grab of the game, with life-like facial expressions and excellent voice-acting. Finding weapons, upgrades and money, earning level ups and completing side quests are all ways to eat up many entertaining hours. The main story hooks you from the get-go and sets up the sequel (coming out in 2010) very nicely. The action is unlike many RPGs in that it is never turn based and only pauses if you are changing weapons (like a faster paced Fallout 3). This is a great game and being a couple years old, it allows you a lot of fun for a very low price.

Highly recommended!
