Miners Battle Brutal Mine Owners' Thugs

Delighted to be able to see this look at coal country history, especially in light of the heated political rhetoric today. A reminder that unions arose because they were desperately needed. Miners today enjoy vastly improved wages and working conditions today because of those early sacrifices. The depressed nature of the industry is far more a matter of broad economic factors (such as fracking) beyond the influence of both labor and management, and no promises or skewed political give-aways will make coal king.

Better than expected

This movie was a lot better than. I expected I bought it for a class project & really enjoyed it.
It gives a good account of the events that lead up to the massacre .

West by God Virginia

Matewan is a must for anyone who grew-up in 'them thar hills'-----Most of us had a gun in our hand by age eleven & could move in the woods like an Indian. We learned to coax a bass into a skillet a half dozen different ways and using a hand-line no less. Life struggle

Great glimpse into rual coal mining life.

Excellent movie about coal mine wars in rual West Virginia. These towns still exist to this day and visiting these depressed areas will make you appreciate what you have at home. I had to watch this movie in my West Virginia History class in middle school. It made me cry. It is a fairly accurate account of the events as reported in the history of the town. A Got To See Movie!!!!

This movie brought back lots of memories since my family lived and some still live in the Matewan area. The story of the massacre, the sights, the sounds ...hhhmm and for Union people its sure shows how good we have it today compared to the real heros. For anyone who thinks that the coal miners are a "nothing breed" think about them the next time you turn on your lights or you fire up your furnaces in the cold winters.....again real heros!!!...This is a got to see movie!!!Read full review...

History at its finest ... great movie

Matewan tells the story of a little known (unless you are from some of the backwoods coal towns) problems endured and courage/valor/lives given that is one of the reasons there is so much pride in those "Hillbilly rednecks" from areas such as West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky.
