The swan song of rock music...

Rock and roll is dead. I remember when it wasn't. Listening to this album brings back the joy of my youth when so much great talent ruled the air waves. It's amazing how a song can remove twenty years and make one feel like a kid again. Don't remember the 'glory days'. Just remember some good ones. Thanks Smashing Pumpkins for the memories.Read full review...

Not a huge Pumpkins Fan, but...

I'm not really a big SP fan, so I'm probably a good person to write a review of this. I bought this primarily because it contains most of the songs by the Pumpkins that I like (1979, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, and Tonight, Tonight.
All in all, it's a pretty good album otherwise, but I think it's a little long winded. It's a double disc (Disc 1: Dawn to Dusk, and Disc 2: Twilight to Starlight). I personally feel like there is a lot of filler on here, and this album would have been much better if limited to a single disc. There are 28 total tracks...14 per disc, and that's about 14 too many. Some of the other tracks are pretty good, I have not learned the titles of them all yet, because I've only listened to it a couple of times, and had never heard the tracks before I got this CD, as the radio only plays the big 4 tracks from this album.

Based on this album, I'd probably be hard pressed to purchase another Pumpkins album without hearing the whole thing first. But I did want this one in my collection, simply because I like the songs I mentioned above.

I will say that the CD does have great packaging. Obviously it's a double-CD jewel case design, and the two discs look nice (although my Disc 1 had a really bad skip on track 11 "Galapogos", but I was able to polish the disc and make it play properly...although you can easily see a bad scratch on the disc). It comes not only with a complete lyric booklet, but also another booklet of images all in the theme of the front and back cover of the album (CD). Nice packaging...which is part of the alure of owning physical product over downloading audio files.

One of the Best Albums of All Time

I've purchased this CD set 3 times since it came out, due to losing a disc here and there when moving and what not.

It's a snapshot in time of when music was simply amazing. Nothing has come out since that can compare to this piece of art, and I would be very surprised if anything came out in my lifetime that could even come close to it.

This album marks the pinnacle of The Smashing Pumpkins music and will (in my opinion) reign as their greatest album ever made. They couldn't ever top this. While I enjoy Adore and Machina (II), Zwan and Zeitgeist very much, I don't think they capture the sound of when SP was at their best.

I respect the bands push to keep their sound changing and evolving, because any respectful listener would be out of their mind to expect a band to keep churning out the same stuff over and over (which we see so commonly these days). We have MCIS to enjoy when we want that old Pumpkins sound while being able to enjoy the new sounds Billy Corgan creates up through Teargarden.

Theres a lot and Bullet with the butterflywings...

The reason i give this an excellent rating- Bullet with the Butterfly wings. That song alone is worth the cd set. Then you got the radio classics like Tonight, tonight, 1979, ZERO.. and as for the rest- there good. Givin time to listen to, these will grow on you and you will LOVE them.. Many peeps have this sittin in there cd case not gettin the respect it deserves. Sad and sadness go together.. Someday your shi* will hit the fan and this will cheer you up. Best played sittin in the car in a rainy parking lot with a doobie and a hot girlfriend.. i am VERY lucky and know it. Best nights ever. Thanks Lisa.Read full review...

This album is smashing!

"Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" is a big album and there are plenty of great songs to love. My favorite Smashing Pumpkins song has always been "1979", but "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" is probably their most famous song. And "Zero" kicks ass. There's just so much to choose from.Read full review...

In The Arms Of Sleep

A lot of critics found this album to be pretentious, over the top, self indulgent, and "too artsy". I found it to be a brilliant masterpiece. Maybe I'm a sucker or maybe I just have an ear for good tunes. Whatever the case may be, I love this album and consider it to be my favorite work by this incredible band. From the hard rocking Bullet With Butterfly Wings (my favorite pumpkins song) to the classic romantic Tonight Tonight to the nostalgic 1979, Corgan captures each mood flawlessly. 5 Huge Stars.Read full review...

smashing pumpkins-mellon collie and the infinite sadnes

like most double lps/cds with the exception of Layla/Exile on main street, this could be boiled down to one great cd. it's stylisticly all over the map, a good thing when it works. HERE IT WORKS MAINLY ON THE HARD ROCKERS. The real irony is that the related singles contain material that is superior to anything on Mellon Collie, particularly the 33 which has 'Transformer', one of the best songs the Smashing Pumpkins ever recorded, and a coll version of 'My Blue Heaven'.Read full review...

This Pumpkins are Smashings

The best album by the group. From the moment i saw the 'Tonight, tonight' MTV during the 90's, I was convinced this is a must buy album. All great tracks till the last song. In an era where everyone wanted to be Pearl Jam or Metallica, Billy's SP really save me from dropping rock genre out of my list. Btw, anyone got the 'Stigmata' soundtrack?Read full review...

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: CD Review

AMAZING!!! I bought this album for my boyfriend who is a dye-hard Smashing Pumpkins fan and he could not believe that I had managed to find a copy of 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' as it is VERY rare!

Most of the songs on 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' are also featured on their greatest hits, so this album is a must-have in your collection.
