This concert took place in the basilica of St. Mark’s in Venice to observe
the 2007 50th anniversary of the death of the famed conductor Arturo Toscanini. It's conductor was Lorin Maazel, whom at age 11 Toscanini had a great impact after they met in New York.

Verdi conducted the Requiem's premier in 1873 at Milan, Italy. It became a masterwork for Toscanini who had known the composer personally. He performed it 30 times from 1902 and 1950. At least two of those performmances are available on CD.

Maazel was the original conductor of Symphonica Toscanini. He has been the music director of the New York Philharmonic since 2002. In his career Maazel has conducted over 150 orchestras.

Symphonica Toscanini began in 2004 as the Toscanini Philharmonic. The name was changed in 2006. It is made up from 200 young musicians from all over Europe who are part of the Toscanini Foundation in Italy.
