Harder than I remember

Although it's a little graphically challenged it's still a intriguing game to play. I had it when I was a kid in the early '90's & it's a lot harder than I remember. I was once able to explore the entire game map quite easily, now I can barely make it out of the first town. There are tons of enemies to fight & items & treasure to obtain. Lots of characters to choose from and it's all in the rolling of the dice if you take the time to create the perfect war party. If you were in to the Dungeons & Dragons type of role playing games this was one of the pioneer attempts to bring it to the home video game screen.Read full review...

Might and Magic is HUGE &No 6 button controller Needed

First I wanted to mention the only other review of this game on ebay at this time mentions "Just be sure you have a 6 button pad or you cant play it. It will not work without one." This is NOT A FACT, the game was released years before there was a 6 button controller for the Genesis. I assume the review was ment for another game?!

I an wrighting this review so people dont miss out on Might and Magic on the genesis over that review.

Now on with my review of the game.
Might & Magic is the biggest & most open rpg on a console in the 8 & 16 bit era. Only to be mached or surpassed by Morrowind on the Xbox in 32 bit.
It is likely the elder scrolls games were inspired "to some degree" by the early might & magic franchies.
Unlike the traditional 16 bit console rpg you are not consistantly pushed in 1 direction & led "by the hand"*
Once you exit the 1st town you can travel in any direction.
You begin by forming a party of up to 8 adventures or selecting the default party already made up.
The game is played from a 1st person perspective in & outside of cities & dungeons including outdoors.
This is not total dungeon crawling rpg like the wizardy series was you get to run around outdoors alot passing through woods, deserts, swamps, mountain passes, fields,& more. Each region has its own nice graphics & monsters.
The battles go into a more traditional turn based screen. But more options are avalible than in most 16bit rpgs & you can hold the attack/command button down for a turbo speed battle. A turbo battle auto selects the last command for all characters & goes onward with those commands until you release the button or the battle has ended. This is truly turbo battle you go throught way more opposition than other turn based rpgs in a fraction of the time.
Example of using turbo mode in might & magic compaired to final fantsy2 battles you kill around 40-50 monsters in the time it would take to fight 4-6 in FF.
There are times you fight 100 or more monsters at a time in M&M so this is needed & affective. To assist you is these battles there are 100s of weapons & 100s of armors. vast assortment Weapons consists of everthing from poison knives & magic swords to bull whips & sickles. As far as Armor goes there are 5 classes & 5 types in each class, along with magic versions of all.
There is also a vast assortment of magic spells in the game, 96 total spells anything from a fireball to walk on water spells. theres plenty for you magic fans.
There are 5 races to make a character with. Create character classes of knights, sorceres, clerics, ninjas, paladins & more.
Theres so much to this game i'll leave my review due to text quantity restrictions.

There is one way to express the scope of this game the Sega Genesis version came packed with a Fat 150ish page HINT BOOK.
This is a fact book on the game not a walk through book. (similar to the smaller book that came with phantasy star 2)
If you want to play this game I "highly recomend you buy a copy that has the hint book included". The book is much rarer than the game.

I would recomend this game to any rpg fan, its worth it to see how much an rpg realy had to offer in the days of 2d gaming.

Note: this is not a cake walk rpg, this game was made for adults & you will likely need the hint book mentioned above.
The box states over 100 hours of play, that is to do evething in the game?

Gates to Another World didnt follow cliches, it helped create them.

Have Fun

Possibly the first open-ended console game-great sword and sorcery game

This is one of the games I found very addictive when I was a games-obsessed child, growing up in the Genesis' heyday. It is still playable, although the 3-D graphics are primitive compared to modern games, of course. But then, it was always intended to be a sort of 'cartoony' medieval fantasy game and so I don't think it suffers too much from its lack of visual sophistication. It was a precursor to the type of open-ended game that later evolved into games like the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. I do believe this was the first game for a console that wasn't scripted and basically allowed you to go out and do anything you wanted. That is what made it addictive. If you like open-ended, sword and sorcery type games or want to own the first truly open-ended console game, then I highly recommend this one!Read full review...

Amazing, one of the best RP games of all time.

I purchased this back in 91 when it was 1st released. My best friend and I spent countless, and I mean countless hours enjoying this. This was before 300 page "Guides" were released before the game itself was even released. So my buddy would draw maps and I would be on the controller. This game was so vast I don't recall ever completing it or if that was even possible. A MUST have for RP fans.Read full review...

a must have

this is one of the best, in my opinion, rpg's made for sega. it is amazingly large for the era and the game play is nicely complex yet not overly confusing. don't look towards graphix, of course, because it is after all still only 16 bit but if you like this styloe of game to start with it is a must have. just put it next to your shining in the darkness and call it good.Read full review...
