Encyclopedia Brown w/ OCD

Monk is one of those characters that can so easily be overdone. We get the tragic death of his wife and his resulting excessive OCD (although we find out he suffered from this long before he even met his wife). But every time he seems to go totally off the deep edge, Shalhoub brings him back to the realm of the living if not the totally sane. Above all though are the plots. These stories are in the best tradition of mini-mysteries a la Encyclopedia Brown. It's always one little thing said, one tiny gesture or some incongruous element at a crime scene that ultimately tips off the indomitable Monk. Sure you have to put up with Monks idiosyncrasies (faithful nurse/sidekick, Sharona, has him 24/7!), but the clues are there for all to find....Read full review...

Monk is clever

This series is so clever and is very well written. Tony Shaloub does an excellent job portraying the role of someone with OCD. My husband received a set of Monk DvDs from his sister for his sixtieth birthday and I am the one who has become the Monk fan!

The Monk series puts the viewer's imagination to work in trying to solve the cases. Sometimes the murderer is known upfront, and we are there to help Monk solve the case and figure out the connections. I find myself routing for Monk as he tries to be taken seriously when his hunches are off-the-wall but correct.

The series is addictive, fun, imaginative and a great alternative to all the junk that is on tv today.

Great Entertainment

Monk is very well written and sensitive. I love the title character and his vulnerability. Perhaps the very unfortunate illness he has is what makes him so human. OCD is not a funny disease, yet this show, although amusing does not mock or make light of the disease. Its an intelligent, endearing show, in my opinion. Read full review...

Trouble out there

One of my favorite TV shows of all time. The price is right with this buy! Monk used to be on Netflix but then they took it off while I was mid reaching the series. Wrote a letter to netflix but never heard back.... Very happy my boyfriend got me the series so I can watch it over and over again as many times as my little heart desires. Thank you.Read full review...

No sound on bonus features

I had seen all the season 1 episodes of "Monk," but bought the DVD set specifically for the bonus features. I was extremely disappointed to find out that there was no sound with the bonus features. A quick look at the Amazon.com reviews showed that a lot of people with standard television sets had the same problem. I even wrote Universal Studios who directed me to change the audio settings on my TV. It didn't work and they didn't respond to my further inquiries. If you love "Monk" and are only interested in the episodes (it is a short season), then this is a great set. If you are primarily interested in the bonus features and have a regular TV set, then don't bother.Read full review...

The Best Detective Show on Television on DVD

I bought this DVD to begin my Monk Series Collection. This 4-disc DVD set contains the series premier, the entire first season, as well as a number of great special features. The packaging is also very entertaining and well thought out.

This offbeat dramedy has fast become my favorite show. The pilot episode, "Mr. Monk and the Candidate," begins in silence. A group of police officers and detectives stand around a kitchen. There is a body of a dead woman on the floor. A man in a brown suit jacket quietly surveys the incident, methodically taking in the crime scene, his assistant looking on. The first word said? "Stove." When an officer points out the stove in the kitchen, the man explains, "No... I mean my stove. I-I think I left it on." And we are introduced to Adrian Monk, the admired, respected but defective detective.

He was once a cop but was dealt a devastating blow when his wife Trudy was killed with a car bomb by an unknown assailant. Monk lost his ability to function normally in society and lost his job as a police detective. He recently has returned to police work as a consulting detective with the help of his nurse Sharona Fleming and his psychiatrist Dr. Kroger. His brilliant detective skills are utilized by San Francisco police officers Captain Stottlemeyer and Lt. Disher. When the cases are tough to solve, the call in Adrian Monk. His deductive reasoning and amazing powers of perception bring down the bad guys. His fears and compulsive distractions cause him and his cohorts no end of grief.

Each disc enlightens us to his keen mind and overwhelming phobias. Actor Tony Shalhoub won an Emmy® and Golden Globe® for his portrayal of the obsessive-compulsive detective. The entire cast is outstanding, the show non-stop fun.

Each disc contains 3 episodes each from Monk Season One. Disc Four also contains the bonus material including "Mr. Monk and His Origins." This set is the first season of a 6-season show. Seasons 1-5 are out on DVD. Season 6 begins in July on the USA Network.

I highly recommend this series DVD and the entire show to anyone who appreciates great writing and enjoyable, character-driven mysteries.

Monk - Season 1

Monk is a unique quirky detective whose TV series provides clean & fun entertainment suitable for all ages. His behavior displays phobias that every day people have to one degree or another, making his character believable and lovable. Monk's ability to see the small details at crime scenes enable him to solve mysteries that others cannot. I can watch an episode over and over, and pick up something new each time. The interaction of all the characters is amazing! The people who did the casting got it right! The major TV networks sure missed the mark letting this one go. I don't have cable, so thanks, USA network for providing me hours and hours of great fun with this series on dvd!Read full review...
