High precision, top quality, and thoughtful design but a little pricey.

I initially purchased a polished aluminum "billet" one. They are common and you've probably seen them. More cost effective than the Moroso so I tried to save a few bucks. However, like seems to happen so many times in life, trying to save money often results in just spending more because after it arrived, I could see that it mounts using the two lower timing cover bolts. Because the lowermost timing cover bolt is shrouded by the harmonic balancer once installed, removing it in the future could be problematic. For example, you just built your motor on the stand but haven't started it up yet. You installed a cast aluminum timing cover (like I did) and found that the bolt holes have a machined recess sized and best fastened with small headed fasteners (like 12-pt bolts or Allen headed bolts). Except that those fasteners don't do a good job of sealing the bolt holes which may not be "perfectly" centered. So what do you do if you need to remove those bolts in the future in case you discover that there is a leak or seepage and the balancer (and all accessories) are already installed? Because there is a good chance that it will become impossible to service that style timing tab unless the balancer is removed first.

So after a few cuss words and tossing the "billet" pointer into the "never-to-be-used-again" parts bin, I sucked it up and ordered the Moroso one. There are other similar looking ones for sale by other brands (or unbranded) which are probably either clones or OEMs of this one but I like the Moroso brand because they seem to be good quality at reasonable prices.

When it arrived, my initial impression is a positive one. The pointer seems to a high precision high quality product. The finish is a satiny black which although not flashy like the billet one, will probably mean long service life without future chalky corrosion that affects all natural finish aluminum. It also contrasts well with the aluminum cover I am using. Fit is like a glove. The timer carrier has a curve that seems to hug the radius of the 8" balancer I'm using. See the image I attached for an idea of what I'm talking about. Unlike the previous pointer I purchased, this one thoughtfully uses the 2nd and 3rd timing cover bolt (from bottom). This means it can be installed and removed irrespective of the presence of balancer since neither bolt is behind or below the balancer. The only things I wish that would make this product better is a longer pointer since timing marks are usually, or at least one my balancer, on the outer edge, and also a lower price. Although excellent quality, I'm sure that the cost to mass manufacture this item is but a small fraction of the price. On the other hand, I suppose the cost is small compared to what one would have to go through in order to fabricate their own in terms of cost and time. Anyone that replaces a factory timing cover with integral tack welded timing pointer will have this same problem, so I'm sure it's a lucrative product for any manufacturer to include in their product line ups.

Great part, legendary quality!

MOROSO always delivers USA made quality!

Had to modify a bit to clear the Jones Racing front drive power steering pump bracket.
