Torture. Almost Cruel.

I'm a fan of racing games. Especially ones that do something different. Since the 90's, kids. I gave this two stars for graphics & premise. The game play sadly is horrible. About every ten seconds you will crash. You might not even know why. You hit a rock going not even boost speed and totaled your car.. again?! It's almost impossible not to crash even with practice. I stayed calm & played this for a while. Most games I get better at if I don't connect with it right away. This is on par with Mario Bros Lost Levels (Japanese Mario Bros 2) as far as difficulty. It's almost cruel because you WANT to like it so much! This is going to sit on my shelf until yard sale day.Read full review...

Fun Game, Missing features

Motorstorm is an exciting and fast paced off-road racing game exclusively for the Playstation 3. This game features nice graphics, fun gameplay, and competitive courses.

The game is set in the Desert at a made up festival. You race several types of vehicles in this game. From dirtbikes and ATVs, through buggies, onto cars and trucks and really large trucks (and semi-trucks as well) , there are plenty of options Each race is set up by a "Card." The more cards you defeat, the more races open up to you. Therein lies the first problem with the game. It lacks a quick play option. There is also no dual screen multiplayer. This game has several courses which are fun (and using different vehicles on them makes them unique as well), and some feature mud, others more dust, and all feature exciting races.

The races themselves are dramatic affairs. You race at high speeds utilizing an accelerator and a boost method. Your boost is temporary, and if it is overloaded, your vehicle will explode. If you crash into other vehicles, parts will fly off, and along the way your vehicle will garner more dust and mud. Crashes are spectacular affairs, as they spray metal all over, oftentimes involve many vehicles, and even drivers go flying from the smaller vehicles.

This game features excellent graphics, a loud soundtrack, and spectacular fun. However, it lacks some depth (with online updates this game gets better), and the lack of a quickplay option is also a problem. Also one must note that the loading times are long for this title. So grab popcorn while waiting to play.

Graphics: Spectacular, and the physics in the game are also well done.
Sound: A VERY loud game by default. The music is good for racing, and the explosion sounds are also good.
Gameplay: The gameplay in this game is the best part. If you own a PS3, download the demo to get a small taste of the fast paced action.
Presentation: This game lacks in some basic features, and has a long loading time as well.
Replay Value: High, with online multiplayer, as well as more options for expansions to the game.

Overall: A 4 out of 5 rating. A good game, but its sequel, coming this year, should surpass it in every aspect. Still, a bargain if you can find it for 30 dollars.

Good showcase title for PS3

MotorStorm ships with the 80GB version of the PS3. The title was a great choice by Sony to showcase the PS3 - the graphics are excellent, it's a lot of fun to play, and it has simple controls and short games to make it easy to get into.

The premise of the game is a huge racing festival taking place in the desert of Monument Valley, AZ. Seven vehicle classes are available from motocross bikes to big rigs and multiple models and trims are available within each class. Races take place on eight different muddy, rocky, off-road tracks through canyons, over rock formations, and around various obstacles.

The tracks are not a single path, which adds to the challenge - there are always multiple ways to get around, some better suited to particular vehicle types, and the track changes on each lap as it is torn up by the competitors and obstacles are pushed around.

During the race mud splatters on your windshield, vehicles get dirty and damaged, and when you "die" there are explosions and a slow-mo replay of your vehicle flying apart. All of these effects, along with the surrounding terrain and views are beautifully rendered. Game physics are also very good.

Controls are simple and quick to learn. Individual races last several minutes each, so there's not a large time commitment. Load times for choosing vehicles and starting races are a bit slow, but understandable given the graphical complexity.

Online play is available, but I haven't experienced it yet to comment on it.

MotorStorm is a Visceral and enjoyable Desert ride

read more reviews and watch game videos @ http://blog.graduategames.com

MotorStorm for Playstation 3 remains a gorgeous looking game and really boils down to this: It's an intense racing title with gorgeous graphics, a great variety of vehicles, and a bunch of levels and tracks that all look very similar. I understand that Motor Storm takes place in an undisclosed desert and is an undersground event...but do all the levels have to be sandy gold, gritty orange, and muddy maroon? Don't get me wrong...the different textures and tracks and how different vehicles all handle them is very fun. It's just a shame that all the tracks look so similar. There's actually not many tracks at all which further hampers what could be a fantastic game. It's a great start and a great showcase title for the PS3. It could be a franchise to contend with the next time around. Imagine Motorstorm 2 with grassy levels (with varying muddy batches, high grass, etc.), snow covered and icy terrain levels, new vehicles (snow mobiles, hovercrafts, monster trucks), and a wider selection and variety of tracks. That would be a game to contend with! As it stands now. MotorStorm is a damn good game and a wise choice by Sony to package it with the 80GB PS3.

Graphics: 9/10 - Fantastic but lacking level variety
Gameplay: 9/10 - Vehicle diversity, and terrain strategy make this game visceral fun. Enemy AI is a little bit "let you catch up" or "catch up with you"
Sound/Music: 8/10 - Music fits the tone, explosions and other vehicle engines all add to the atmosphere...sometimes it's all alittle much
Lasting Appeal: 7/10 - The lack of tracks and track variety really hurts the game, but different vehicles and terrain adds to it. After awhile though, everything just is all too sandy and the incentive to unlock the harder mode of the same level you've played already just isn't there.

Motorstorm: Visualy Amazing, Overall a Good Investment

I say investment due to the price tag on accessories and games you really have to be careful which ones you choose to purchase. I bought Motorstorm on its release date and have been extremely satisfied with game. As far as graphics and attention to detail go, this game is flawless. When you go over the track your grooves in the mud and changes you make to the environment stay modified. You vehicle takes damage and gets dirty (which was my only complaint about the Gran Tourismo series, you hit a wall doing 150 mph and your car is still showroom condition) I really like that they combined different types of vehicles and that they all have distinctly different characteristics. It allows you to specialize in different vehicles and once you master one you can move onto the next. Going through the game you are forced to experience all vehicles and different combinations of opponents which makes things interesting. The music is fantastic which really makes a difference in a racing game. I also really like the online multiplayer option which is a lot of fun.
Now the bad; I only gave this game four star because it lacks a two player mode which I think is crucial for any racing game. The load time for selecting your vehicle is also a little long (I can deal with this, but it’s still annoying on a brand new $600 system). And there could have been a few more tracks, after you get through the first 2 levels of difficulty it gets a little redundant. I’m glad it took me a while to complete this game because when I tear through a $60 game in a few days I feel cheated.
In summary the graphics, music and game play make this a worthy purchase. Play a few tracks, get the hang out it then go online to really test your skills.

Motor madness

Alright people step up and witness the review on the first ps3 title to actually make the 600 dollar purchase worth it.In the graphics department,we have some of most insane graphics I have seen in the racing genre of this type.Crashes are spectacular!!! just a mindblowing mix of metal scatterd across your screen in such detail...I love it! The sound in this game is also very very nice.. the crushing, and bending of metal in crashes to the roar or the engines. The controlls are easy AND thanks to the SIXAXIS you can actually tilt your controller to the left or right to steer your vehicle! Now the flaws in the game. Not a huge selection of vehicles, just different paint jobs. The tracks altho huge in size, arent so huge in variety. The online play is somewhat ok,but its just missing something and dont feel right.I think this kind of game is one you want to play at home with friends and not over the internet.Unfortunatly there is no split screen option in this game...so multiplayer is online only.Another thing to note is the loading times!!! come on man this is next-gen the entire city on Crackdown for xbox 360 loads faster than this...Its not a big deal tho and dont let that lead you to believe all ps3 games load slow :P cus they dont. In all im going to give this game a 8.7

It has almost everything you could want in a game, but the things is misses out on are just things developers should know by now to not leave out of a game.So if you got a ps3 I highly recomend this game.

Motorstorm -

Motorstorm - The first title I had played on a PlayStation 3. What drew me in was the incredible graphics of not only the vehicles, but the surroundings landscapes.

I bought this game the day it came out and have been playing it on and off since I bought it.

Likes: Graphics, Videos, New controls (gameplay) with the R2 button as throttle and L2 as reverse, SIXAXIS control is excellent (but tough to use)

Dislikes: small song selection, mainly hard rock (ear sore), no split screen mode, this game is geared around multiplayer online gaming, rowdy teens using foul language in online mode (no way to disable chat...)

Overall this game was an uplift to the lacking PS3 game lineup and I hope Sony releases more updates to this game to unlock more features, still waiting for Split Screen mode.

Strong Racing Game for 2007

Racing game was one of the first ps3 launch games in 2007 that came out to at least compete with the powerful xbox 360. The game is very detailed and the environments are interactive, with cars crashing and pieces flying all over the place. The racing game allows players to choose between dirt bikes, monster trucks, and other vehicles that can give the player an advantage on the tracks. The problem with the game is that there aren't very exotic racetracks, with a majority of them taking place in the desert when the developers should've included racetracks in jungles, cities, snow, etc. I know its motorstorm and its usually dealing with dirt environments, it would've made the game more intriguing. The game is good, I'd give it an 8/10 and it is definitely a game to play if you are done playing your main title games.Read full review...

Good Racing Game

PROS: Has great graphics , great gameplay, nice choice of vehicles to choose from and each vehicle has its own characteristics. Great visually with crashes and enviroment clashes (bushes,trees,ruts,rocks,ect...) Decent tracks to pick from as well.

CONS: Its only a 1 player game unless you want to play online. So if you have a buddy over you cant 2 player race , have to play 1 at a time. Thats not to fun after a while. I mean how hard would it have been to make this a 1-2 player game + online.

Astounding graphics, horrible load times.

This game... could have used some refinement. Overall it is entertaining and if you have the determination to keep banging away at it, it is actually a blast to play. I don't want to make an epic review so let's do this simple...

PROS
Graphics - Vibrant, vivid and realistic and gritty? Oh yes! All the more impressive considering this is one of the founding games of the PS3!

Sound - Oh yeah. In your face SFX and music. Definitely has your X-Games kinda grit and vibe to it... although... there wasn't anything epic or outstanding about it...but... still a positive.

Gameplay - Tough from the get-go... but I give it a thumbs up because once you get used to being thrown to the wolves from minute one... it actually becomes more like a badge of honor type challenge to undertake each new feat. Kinda makes winning that much sweeter.

Controls - Simple but effective

CONS
View Options - Limited viewpoints and driving vantages. One First Person vantage and one third person vantage

Pratice Is Missing - No training session or practice runs to get a familiarity with the tracks (and these tracks have lots of hairpins, ruts, blindspots and hazards.

LOAD TIMES - OMFG this game is AWFUL for this one! The time to load vehicle choices... 60 seconds or so on average. The time to load a race? 2 minutes sometimes. Usually about a minute. Restarts are about 5-20 seconds and vary often. The whole game took forever to get up and running because of the game update prior to playing and that took about 50 minutes if I remember right. Everything on this game loads SLOW.

I want to note that even though everything loads slow... the gameplay does NOT lag... they did do that up proper.

Overall... FUN, Visually amazing, gritty and often frustrating but definitely compelling and challenging. I give it an 7.8 out of 10
