Good Modem from trustable company

Follow the instructions from Motorola and it goes fairly well. The literature from Motorola stated that I could set it up with only an account number and a phone number. In the end, I had to call Xfinity/Comcast and have them register the modem on their network with me. My old modem only supported DOCSIS 3.0 and then not the latest developments of DOCSIS 3.0. The new one supports all DOCSIS 3.0 connections at their highest connect rates as well as DOCSIS 3.1. The modem, after registering, made a DOCSIS 3.1 connection as indicated on the front of device with a lighted symbol showing so. Not supported by RCN

Unfortunately, although RCN supports DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 modems, they explicitly do not support this one model, and neither RCN nor Motorola seems to be working on the problem.
When asked about it, RCN said, "The Motorola MB8600 can connect but is known to have a lot of issues keeping a stable connection with our network. I am not sure of the exact details, only that downstream and upstream channels will not stay locked, often causing an intermittent modem."Read full review...

Excellent DOCSIS 3.1 Modem

I've shopped for a modem to future proof my needs and looked at several brand name DOCSIS 3.1 modems. The MB8600 had one of the better prices and specs. It was pretty much "plug and play" with Xfinity. I have been using it for a couple of weeks and it has been rock solid (knock on wood).

I am using this as DOCSIS 3.0 with the 32 bonded channels downstream and 4 upstream. This modem can do 8 bonded channels upstream, but Xifinity limits me to just the 4 channels up. Currently, this is plenty for me as I am only on a 150 mbps plan.Read full review...

DOCSIS 3.1 goodness

I upgraded from a DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola MB6141 which worked OK, except I started noticing a lot of buffering going on recently in audio or video streaming (like someone remotely pressing the pause button repeatedly). Decided to try the upgrade to the MB8600 rated for DOCSIS 3.1. Uses a Broadcom chipset that's proven reliable (best protection from things like denial of service attacks) and if you get routers with port aggregation this will future proof you for 2GB ISP plans. There are only about three gigabit modems on the market currently, as most people do not have access to gigabit speeds in their service area.

However, with the latest 3.1 DOCIS compatibility, you can be assured that you will be able to connect to Comcast's Xfinity with every bit (and maybe a little more of the MBPS (AKA "download" speeds) that you pay for!

With the "Blast" Package I pay for up to 200 MBPS/ download and I get above that on every speed test! (Usually around 210-220 MBPS) You're already paying for it, so why not get all of what you're paying for!?

Upgrading for faster speed

I was confused with the four Ethernet ports until I read on the Internet that only one could be used to go to my router. The four ports are available for special applications and not for residential customer use.
Port Bonding and Multiple Assigned IP addresses may be needed by some that have special requirements. I attempted to use these additional ports in addition to my router and was frustrated that my router would not connect. After I removed all the connections except the router, I connected and works great.
I purchased my unit from Amazon Warehouse Deals and it came with no instructions---Probably returned by the previous purchaser who didn't need instructions and couldn't get it to work using all of those ports :)Read full review...

Match you modem to your network plan

Modem is great, but think it through if you are trying to enhance Zoom performance, which may depend on upload speeds. My Xfinity plan tops out at 20mbits/second upload, which is really a good minimum for Zooming. However, my download speed reaches 350 mbs, which speeds up other online work.Read full review...
