The Dependable Motorola SURFboard SB4100 Cable Modem

Pros: 5 years and still working great. No big bulky ac transformer. Easy to reset. provides data to 5 networked machines like a charm. Speed is constant 5Mbps-always.
Cons: According to tech support the modem does not report "ALL" data needed by the ISP provider, like the newer models do.(if this is a con) I don't know what data he is speaking of, but the less they know about your internet activity the better. So wait, this is a pro.
Cons: None

The Motorola SURFboard SB4100

The Motorola SURFboard SB4100 cable modem, which is DOCSIS 1.0 CableLabs Certified and Excite@Home Level 2 approved, features both Ethernet and USB interface connectivity to help ensure compatibility with almost any PC or Macintosh network-ready computer system. What's more, a front-panel standby switch has been added for additional end-user security. It disconnects the USB and Ethernet connection to the computer without disconnecting the cable modem from the network, providing security, flexibility, and performance.

The SB4100 is compatible with Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, and NT, as well as Mac OS and Unix platforms. It supports up to 32 users (1 USB and 31 Ethernet) and is ideal for home and small businesses. Its vertical design requires minimum desk space.

Motorola SURFboard SB4100 Cable Modem

I already had the same cable modem and I wanted it to setup a neighbors network. The modem is very reliable and does a good job for me.

Outdated and slow. Terrible product.

I thought it would work well to replace my Ambit router. Not only was it slower on internet speed, it isn't compatible with Comcast. Oh well, I should've done more research. Stick with the Ambit and newer SURFboard modems.Read full review...

I have been using this same modem on the computer I am using for about ten years. I have had only one problem, at that time the technician told me they had very few problems with this model modem.I bought the new on as a backup.Read full review...

too slow but can be faster with the right firmware, I don't think Comcast supports this type of modem anymore.
