Remember the Golden Days

I've always loved Mario games since the first time my mom gave me the original Nintendo system, and this new Super Mario for DS did not disappoint. I didn't give it an excellent rating because it was so short and in my opinion way too easy to beat. However, it was still fun and had a lot of elements from the original Mario game. I loved it and would recommend this game to anyone who remembers the golden days in games. ^_^Read full review...

Best DS Game Ever!

Are you ready for some classic Nintendo Mario Bros. action?

The gameplay in this new Mario release is just as addicting as it ever was, you can easily spend hours happily running around jumping and squishing Goombas, all the while chasing Bowser Jr so that you can rescue Princess Peach.

You will enjoy your typical world styles such as dungeons, cloud worlds, sand levels, underwater and more. Of course there are several additions such as the Koopa shell that Mario can wear, Mega Mario and Mini Mario... but I'm not going to spoil everything new in the game.

Of course since its in a Nintendo DS there had to be something done with that touch screen we all have come to know and love. So while in a level it displays your progress in the level, when in the worlds you can use it to have a map overview and as a quick way to change worlds. Oh and did I mention that as a bonus there are a load of minigames that Nintendo has added in to use with the touch screen!

Now that I've covered single player its on to the multiplayer. Ah the wonderful things you can do on the DS! Yep, you guessed it the New Super Mario Bros. is a single cartridge game. That means that if you and a friend each have a DS and only your friend has New Super Mario Bros. you can both play it. You would simply download the multiplayer portion on to your DS via the wireless conection and viola! Now you're both battling it out as Mario and Luigi.

So I'd have to say that if you are a Mario fan then you should most defineatly buy this game.

New Super Mario Bros. for DS

I wanted this item because I've always loved Mario games. It has great graphics, great game play, great storyline, the whole works. My one huge disappointment was the fact that the player can only save at certain points in the game -- certain levels -- and not whenever, like previous games. But anyone interested who's previously had the pleasure of enjoying a Mario game should definitely look into this one!Read full review...

Just like a lot of other Mario games perfect level of complexity good graphics

The game is surprisingly challenging and a lot more complex than I was thinking it’s simple enough to learn real fast and also really addictive I love to take it on the go.

All things Super Mario, and then some!

I played every Super Mario game from the antiquated NES to the newfangled Nintendo Wii. I have always greatly enjoyed the handheld versions of this series, and this latest edition to an already sterling series is without a doubt the most enjoyable.

Whether it be the Super Mario 64-esque characters, the bright new environments, or the mix of old and new obstacles and enemies, this game shines above the rest. Its main adventure includes the typical side scrolling fun of Super Mario, but in beautiful detail and bright colors. The characters and enemies have a 3D look that make the game more fun than any of its side scrolling predecessors. It brings new enemies to the table, as well as new obstacles and environments. The blue shell and giant mushroom power ups for Mario are more than fun. Also, instead of the traditional 10 or so levels then castle level, this game includes two different castles and multiple paths to get to them. This aspect Nintendo definitely took from Super Mario 3, and it works quite well.

Probably the best addition to this game is the integration of the DS's touch screen for the Mini-games. The game comes with a wide variety of mini-games to play that includes genres from Action to card games. My personal favorite mini-game would be the Mario inspired version of Whack-a-Mole. The mini-games are intuitive and highly addictive.

I have yet to play the multiplayer portion of this game, but just the single player modes are enough to keep me playing into the wee hours of the morning.

I highly recommend this game to any and all Super Mario fans, as it has many appealing elements.

Thank you Nintendo: You've done it again. But better.

WOW WOW

Wow does it again!
Did you ever have a teacher or professor who graded you down because even though you did a great job on your work, he felt you "weren't living up to your potential?" It was flattering, sure, because it meant he thought highly of you -- but it was also sort of infuriating, because his backhanded compliment was screwing up your GPA. Once you play New Super Mario Bros., though, you might have a better understanding of where he was coming from. As Mario's first old-fashioned 2D platformer in 14 years, NSMB is practically guaranteed to be a good time for newcomers and old-timers alike. But it's hard to shake the sensation that Mario could do better. NSMB is an unapologetic journey into gaming's past (and Mario's in particular) -- everything about it speaks of a game design sensibility that's become all but extinct. Case in point: NSMB never once holds players' hands; you're dropped into the action and left to fend for yourself without a word of explanation. No signs, no tutorials, not even big flashing buttons over important items. It's completely up to you to discover the full potential of the game's handful of new power-ups and countless hidden secrets. Mario vets will have a slight advantage here -- quite a few stages echo levels from games past and feature entirely new goodies in place of the old secrets. Pass up the end of the stage by running along the roof of the SMB World 1-2 reprise, for instance, and you'll find an alternate stage exit rather than a warp pipe to later worlds. Still, even those vets will find themselves stumped more often than not, as more than half the game is hidden away behind optional exits, special pipes and other new wrinkles (including two entire worlds). Careful attention to detail and occasional bursts of lateral thinking are crucial here. Hunting for extra lives is also a good idea, too, as NSMB is an unrelentingly tough game. It's easy enough to simply run through each level at breakneck speed and try to reach the end as quickly as possible, but that's really missing the point. Playing to unlock everything, to collect everything, to see everything NSMB has to offer is a tremendously challenging task, fraught with deaths at every turn. There's substance to this game -- its has collectibles, sure, but they're limited to three large coins that must be uncovered in each stage. Most of the secrets are actually worth seeking: new areas, secret paths, rare power-ups. It's almost like Donkey Kong Country never happened. Equally old-fashioned is the no-nonsense approach to story: what little is there is relayed entirely through five-second snippets of pantomime. The graphics, too, are very much in the vein of Mario's 8-bit adventures. They're built of polygons, sure, but the 3D engine mainly serves to allow for more fluid animation and scaling. In terms of aesthetics, NSMB is pure Super Mario Bros. 3 -- everything from the level designs to the characters look like they were taken straight from the NES. Even the worlds themselves are practically cribbed directly from SMB3.
Unfortunately, that fidelity is also where it disappoints. Being so closely patterned after one of the greatest games ever, everything about NSMB is incredibly fun. The controls are tight, the levels are exquisitely designed, enemies are carefully placed to provide maximum challenge without excessive cheapness. But there's a certain creative spark missing, a level of originality that the best Mario games offer freely.

New + Old = Classic Mario

If you remember the old Super Mario Bros and I'm sure you do, you will remember what fun and addiction truly use to be. Well with the New Super Mario Bros that experience can be relived over and over. The first time you go giant on the screen you will feel a rush that only a Mario game can give. The graphics are pleasing and controls responsive. There is not much more you can ask from the main game but the mini-games are the real addiction. The stylus is used in most of these mini games to play cards or move things around and its fast, fun, and exciting. Playing against friends will also be a lot of fun. The price may be a little much for a DS game but hardcore fans will find it well worth it. Others may just want to try a rental and see if you really want to put out the cash but it is worth playing and should not be passed by.
Here's to the good old times.

Old School Mario with some new tricks

I decide to buy this game because I was taking a trip to North Carolina and needed something to keep me occupied on the drive down from Pennsylvania. I knew it was up my alley because I've always been a big fan of the Mario series but this game blew me away.

Nintendo went back to what made Mario famous.. a 2-d side scrolling platformer in the vein of the original Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo Entertainment system. The game plays as a side scolling adventure but Mario dosen't just jump and run , he now can leep off of things in mid air, and stomp things below him all by just using two of the buttons on the DS.

The graphics are done very well, and even though it is 2-d, Mario and Luigi are both very detailed for a game of this genre. The sound is also done very well, as the original theme songs are intertwined with some new beats and sounds.

Overall I would say that this game is about as perfect as a 2-d Mario game can get. If you own a DS and liked the original Super Mario Brothers then this is the game for you.
