An overlooked Square Enix RPG?

From the get go you're treated to a female yelling profanities at a book. Then when the game actually starts your character (which you name) is battling shimmering monsters in a rundown urban environment. Your character is trying to protect his young sick daughter Yonah. After the battle, the story transfers approximately 2000 years in the future where your "new" character is again looking after your sick daughter with the same name. The environment has now completely changed but not in a way that you may expect. Instead of the typical spacey cities, you are now in small hub castle town. The village has 3 exits which each have further exits. The main gameplay consists of doing quests for townspeople, and hack/slashing your way through enemies (slowly leveling). You encounter 2 other party members which help out but can not be directly controlled or managed. You learn a handful of magical skills and with that aforementioned book you can manage your stats by collecting words and pages. The positives: Creative landscapes and structures. The towns and music (at times) have an early 3D Legend of Zelda feel. Collecting objects (that are often useful)from the environment and enemies. An ever unfolding story with passive (ofen humorous) party interactions reminiscent of Dragon Age. Finally I appreciate that I believe it to be a rather short game and feel compelled to keep playing, thinking the goal of completing it is only days away (unless the game throws another twist) instead of months like most other rpgs. The negative: Lack of interesting secrets and activities to do in most environments. A lot of the voice acting is awful ,including the main character! Very slow leveling with only a few areas to grind. Most magical attacks are next to useless. Can only save at mailboxes and at times they are inactive. Fishing can be frustratingly hard. Only physical weapons are swords (a variety would have been nice). For me, blood effects are over the top and unnecessary (even if it does serve a purpose) and the language by a certain party member seems out of place in the fantasy world. I was glad to experience this game which is soon to have an awesome looking spiritual sequel in Automata. I expect that Square Enix having now 6 years to develop the new game can only improve upon the formula which is a solid but flawed foundation.Read full review...

A Well Written, Emotional, Beautiful Tale

This is the perfect example of an underrated game that no one has heard about. Although the graphics, action gameplay, and voice acting leave a lot to be desired, this game still manages to make a good impression through it's story-telling, music, and eccentric gameplay.

With the exception of Kaine and Yonah, the character designs could have used a bit more work. Emil and the twins don't have good, experienced voice actors so their voices end up making the player cringe at times. The fighting gameplay is a bit repetitive - reminiscent of the God of War Series. PS2 graphics.

All these criticisms and yet I still consider it an amazing game. It mixes a bunch of different game styles: side-scrolling, shooting, action, text, mini-games, free-camera, fixed-camera, dungeon, etc. As a result, the player is in for a special experience that they've probably never experienced in a single game before. The story has depth and is emotionally charged, but it doesn't hold your hand. You're going to have to figure out things for yourself and do multiple playthroughs to piece together a better picture. The music is of the ridiculous type that will well you up with heartfelt emotions just by listening to them. Epic through and through.

Platinum Games (studio that is known for their top notch action) is working on a sequel, Nier: Automata. There's a reason why they wanted to work on this series in particular, just like there's a reason why this first game has a cult following. This is some of video gaming's finest art and story-telling. Get it now. You wont be able to put it down until you beat it at least once.

Masterpiece of a game and highly underappreciated.

Beautiful soundtrack and fun gameplay. Not to mention an amazingly enthralling story line that hooks you in for the entirety of the game. I bought this because I had also purchased NieR: Automata which is the sequel or spiritual successor to this game.Read full review...

Nier (2010)

The game was well packaged. The plot and music are 100% good. I warn you! graphics is not a strong point in this game (Square Enix always cut Yoko Taro budget =) )
