Solid build, quick focus, tack sharp

This lens is built very solidly, AF is quick and accurate, great color rendering. Lens is tack sharp and is thus excellent for taking candid portrait photos from longer distances. Excellent quality bokeh, and controllable depth of field at f/2.8 makes it good for taking wide open near-macro quality shots (see photo).Read full review...

Comment: Lens very clean and as described. Lens is immaculate and came well packaged! You can tell that product was handled with care. I did some test shots and very sharp. I would say this is a must have lens for anyone with FX film or wildlife DX

The 180ED is an amazingly compact lens for it's focal length, about the size of a 28-70/2.8 zoom. I shot it on Ektachrome slide film and on a D7000 DX body. In both cases the image is amazing with beautiful rendering of the subjects and out of focus area with nice colors and pristine sharpness. It does improve stopped down but it is one of the sharpest lenses I have owned fully open if not THE sharpest. Cost-wise it was in the $420 range which was reasonable. Quality of the item recieved was very good but I think that is a statement on the quality of the lens itself. If it's had a lens filter on it, I think it takes abuse to render anything less than "New" quality for this metal barrel lens. Only issue I find is in dark lit areas it hunts as you would expect. With AF assist light this should not be a problem and I would say that the AF speed is okay(not fast, but not super slow). What I like about this lens is popping a TC in a pocket and being able to cover on DX digital the equivalent of 270mm to 540mm range on film with really light weight.Read full review...

Amazing.

I've gone through many lenses in my time; brand, off-brand, imitators and high line. This lens is a spectacular accessory. Shot a few images through it out of the box and it does not disappoint.
Sharp, clear, and reliable. It may very well end up being my "on-the-camera" piece. Agree with others that focusing in the closer ranges challenges the system but it helps with being accurate in my work.
Just a great telephoto prime and should be in all Nikonians' bags.

Budget Astrophotography gem

Con: Lens is not light
Pros: great bargin used. Fantastic image given it's age. Great lens for astrophotography

Since it's manual focus anyway, all you need is a $12-$15 dollar adapter to make this work on most Canon bodies. I generally find the Nikon mount Nikkor lenses cheaper and in better shape than the canon mount Nikkor lenses. Read full review...

Nikon 180mm

Fantastic lens. Super sharp. It's at the long end for doing portraits which is a plus these days. It's sometimes hard to find one in good shape at a reasonable price (mainly because folks don't want to give them up I think). Great background blur and an all around superb lens. Read full review...

One of Nikon's sweetest lenses and has stood the test of time.

Longer than the 105mm and shorter than the 200mm. Great bokeh and speed to go along with it. This or the 85mm f/1.4 is the lens to have in your bag if you want to shoot candid portraits. I am lucky enough to have the 85mm f/1.4 af, the AF/DC 105mm f/2, and this lens in my bag and it gives me options. To me, it is one of the most sought after lenses in the Nikon lineup and has been popular for more that 40 years. Read full review...

Very sharp prime lens!

I have the Nikon 70 to 200 which is a highly rated lens. But I prefer using prime lenses because of the reduced amount of glasses. It was a little harder to use the prime lands because of the obvious restrictions. It is worth it though because of the sharpness of the images, and 180mm is it excellent lens! A terrific value for the money!Read full review...

One of Nikkor's top 20 easily. Zooms are for wussies!

This is great to have, on D700 and other DX cameras it's 270mm equivalent. I have a 180mm AIs also, The IF makes it easier to use than the AIs, but they're both very good!! AIs has an edge in overall build quality. I wouldn't be scared to use this thing on the sidelines of a football game though lolRead full review...
