Excellent compact quality

I love this camera, after first impressions when it was released were negative. It is a quality camera, with lots of positives, one being the speed. It is fast, great for catching wildlife with the superb Nikon CX 70-300 VR lens.

The few negatives can be irritants - use of the Micro-SD memory card, which I have overcome by keeping a Micro-SD to SD adapter handy. The accessory grip, which is a really fine addition, has to be removed every time the battery needs changing. Compared to a DSLR, battery life is relatively short. Also, Nikon recommends removing the removable EVF viewfinder after using, which to me is a bother. I leave it on all the time

Overall, I really like the V3 and would recommend it to others. I got mine at a discount, making it a good deal.

Lightweight Great Features for birding

This camera is great for photographing birds. That is because it have a 2.7 cropping factor and if ,for example, you use a 300 mm lens it's equivalent to an 810 mm . You will need to buy a viewfinder and you can use any Nikon lens if you buy the converter.

Because of the cropping factor you will produce great photos without the need of a very expensive lens, using a very light weight gear and also with the capacity of 20 FPS.

Because of It's tiny sensor this camera is not for portrait and is just OK for all other purposes.

Great little cameras.

The only thing wrong with the Nikon 1 series cameras is they quit making them. I think for someone buying into this family of cameras now, the question really turns on two lenses. ONe is the 1 Nikkor VR 70-300 f/4,5-5.6 zoom. The other is the 1 Nikkor 32mm f/1.2. If you can get either or both of these lenses at a reasonable price, the whole system is fantastic. Those two lenses are absolutely incredible. The zoom is equivalent to a 189-810 in the larger 35mm sized cameras. But, it's in a small enough package that you can easily hand hold it (with bracing). I've gotten some amazing shots with it. The 32mm is a fantastic low light and portrait lens. The only real downside to the Nikon 1 v2 or v3 is that they do very slowly build up heat when in video mode. You can go about 20 minutes before you have to shut down and let them cool off. But, who runs video for that long at a spurt anyway? If I didn't own virtually the entire 1 Nikkor lens family and was just starting out, then I would probably go with the Nikon Z family, but for the money the Nikon 1 is a great system that doesn't disappoint. I'll include a pic that I got with the zoom at about 100 yards, and you decide.Read full review...

Small package with DSLR features

I am a V1 owner prior to purchasing the V3. The V3 has a later sensor with higher megapixel resolution and DSLR features. For me the V3 mode dial is in a better location where as I accidentally change the shooting mode on my V1. I bought the body only and used my existing lenses with no issues. My complain about the V3 is the extra grip covers the battery and requires removing to replace the battery. This is a challenge for me being a stroke survivor with one handed operation. The other concern I have is the EVF is an Add-on and makes it taller than the V1, so I need a different camera case that will not press on the EVF. I also have the FT1 mount for use with a Nikon AFS 70-300 VR. It took me some time to research the issues with the Nikon 1 V1 firmware but had no problem with the V3. Before you update to the latest firmware understand the fix and limitations. I chose to deal with the limitations of V1 firmware 1.3 and not go to the latest 1.4 especially if you have the FT1 adapter for F-mount AF lenses.Read full review...

Nikon 1 V3

The camera works a little different than the other Nikon camera"s and does take a bit of getting used to. The biggest problem is that Nikon no longer makes any upgrades to the Nikon 1, so what ever is out there is about all that you can use with it. Nikkor does make very good optics, and there is a limit to the the lenses that are out there. I bought it because of its smallness and the fact that I know that Nikon has in the past made quality equipment. I do not know if I would recommend these lines of cameras due to not much out there for them and the fact that you cannot use any other flash units other than the SB 5 and 7 that are out there and they are over priced for there smallest and lack of functions that most quality flash units have. I guess about the only other flash you can use is one that allows you to shoot in a slave mode, but then you would have to buy a bar to mount it on. The EVF is fine to use especially when you are in bright sun light. It is rather expensive as an add on, the camera is a delicate piece and a lot of the pieces tend to break easily. A low end Nikon would be more suitable and cheaper in the long run. If you like taking a camera that is not heavy, takes a great photo and has quality optics, then I would say it is a good buy......Read full review...

Still delivers excellent images long after being discontinued by Nikon

This is the top of the line in Nikon's original mirrorless interchangeable lens system. Although Nikon discontinued the lineman years ago this camera still holds its own compared to other brands, and it is probably the best way to get an extensive and capable system ranging from ultra wide to extreme telephoto by buying the proper dedicated lenses. As with every other camera in the Nikon 1 system it has unique quirks that may bother some users, but it is a very capable camera that I use every day.Read full review...
