Sharp images with unbelievable details

This lens can do micro macro photography great! If you have kit lenses and you are considering another lens, get this one over the 35 mm or the 50 mm. Hands down much better value. I am very pleased with the lens. If it had some vibration reduction as well, that would be great.

Zoom in on the pictures. You can see the pollen and the details in the pistols. With a tripod and better lighting I could have captured more detail.

This is a fine, bargain-priced alternative for or addition to a "kit" lens.

The only reason for my not giving this lens a solid 5-star rating is the lack of f-stop settings, which was a given going in. Its use is therefor limited to the new bodies with settings done on the camera. Otherwise, it is a bright, extremely sharp lens at all apertures and distances, good for portrait and general use as well as 1:1 macro, with a bokeh far superior to what you get with your "kit" zoom lens. At its 60mm equivalent with DX format you can just leave it on and use your feet for zooming. Its light weight makes it easy to carry all day, too.Read full review...

Opens up a whole new world

My first experience with macro photography and am having a lot of fun exploring my backyard. images are very sharp, but with that comes a very small focal range which can be challenging. I often find myself bumping into subject with lens. I guess I will be looking to add a longer lens so I don't have to get that close. Maybe 105mm macro.Read full review...

A very good macro lens on a Nikon 1 system camera

Although not the best focal length for a macro lens (it puts the front of the lens very close to the subject) on a DX body, it works very well on a Nikon 1 system body such as the V2 via the Nikon FT1 adapter. The small size and weight of this lens are a decent match for Nikon's discontinued mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras built around the 1" sensor.Read full review...

Nice but 1:1requires getting too close in.

Nice lens, sharp images, but for macro work you really need a longer focal length, Nikon's 105mm micro or Tokina's 100mm macro probably a better choice for macro photography.

Excellent macro lens!

You won’t find a better lens for taking pics of products you wish to sell. Also great for flowers! Not the best for insects due to focal point. Highly recommended

Excellent close up lens

This is an excellent camera lens, it is actually better than what I expected it to be. I was surprised at the clarity of the details on my close up shots. The use of it is a lot easier than most of the lenses out in the market today. My only dissapoinment was it's price because it a little bit over priced. Although I wouldn't trade this lens for any other close up lenses available out there today. If you need a real good close up lens the without a doubt this the best one to get out there.Read full review...

Great lens for performance and portability.

I have been using a zoom lens on my D300. I find that most of the photography I do is close up, nature photography. Yes a zoom helps me get zoomed in on the subject but since most of the things I take pictures of are flowers it is better to be able to get close. The 40 F2.8 allows me to fill the picture with my subject as well as giving me ample light to work with for depth of field. The lens is light so it makes woking with the camera easier. I have enough pixels in each shot that I can do post zoom work with Photo Shop so now I have an excellent combination of portability and performance. Great lens. Some people do not like that the lens has some plastic parts. I trust Nikon and there is nothing about the lens that seems cheap, plus that the plastics of today are not the cheap product of past days. The lens feels and looks well made.Read full review...

Great Lens

Its a great lens for DX body, this is good all over lens for portrait and macro work to. The macro distance is little closer which may be accepted for 40mm but not good for smaller moving insects. But, the image quality is really good, sharp and nice bokh for all kind of photography.
All over worth to buy lens for DX body and I am using this on my Nikon D7200.
