Good multi-purpose lens

You get a great variety of focal length. Photograph the whole scene or only a small part of it. Great multi-purpose lens but you might struggle with lens speed.

Shoots better pictures in bright light, but that's true of most every lens.

The thing that bugs me the most is that at the shortest focal length, you still need for be over 36" away from your subject, unlike a normal short focal length which would allow you within a few inches from your subject.

Respecting that limitation, it is still a good value for it's features. It focues quickly and accurately.

Good, but not great.

I knew before buying this lens that it was not going to be the sharpest image quality but that it should, as per multiple reviews, provide a reasonably decent image throughout its zoom range, perhaps a little less sharp at the ends of the focal length. I purchased it as a general, walk-around, all purpose lens. Unfortunately, I am finding the results to be less than anticipated. It will produce a decent image, on tripod, with remote, at short focal lengths, say 70mm and under, but I'm having issues with hand held stability and the focus motor is loud and clunky. Yeah, it could be me, but I dont have the same issues with other nikkor lenses. Granted, I purchased a "like new" used lens and as much as I'd like to believe there were no issues prior to sale, I'm inclined to believe that the reason for the great price it was offered at, was due to these same issues. Whether these are inherant issues with the lens or whether it developed issues with an original owner, I really cant say at this time. It has however provided me with new knowledge and understanding of the benefits and shortcomings of these types of zoon lens. Read full review...

Major Improvement over the Previous Version

This lens is much better at focusing and it is much more durable than it's version one cousin. The Added feature has a lock at 18mm function, which prevents the lens from creeping out, risking damage from wear and tear. This 18-200mm VR DX Mark II Lens is much sharper than the 18-200mm VR DX Mark I cousin. There are a list of improvements on the 18-200mm VR DX Mark II that helps with the use for photography. Less Creep when you're photographing. This is a must own lens for all Nikon DX DSLR Cameras that are out there on the market.Read full review...

Very Good Lens

The lens is on the heavy side, but on the other hand it feels sold and durable. While the focal length is solid what you get with this lens is an all in one fully capable lens able to do almost everything. I tested the newer version and didn't see much of a difference at all. I've used it for about two weeks now and while you can certainly spend about $1000 for for the best lens out there, this lens will do mostly the same work for a fraction of the cost.

Highly recommend if you can find one in great shape.

Great lens for all around when you want to carry one lens.

This is a great lens and easy to use. It's a practical lens when you want to just carry one and not remove it from your camera. It will take any type of photo and a simple solution to multiple lenses.Read full review...

An excellent, sharp lens with a 11x zoom

This is one of Nikon's best zoom DX lenses. I especially like the VR "Normal/Active" switch, which gives the user the choice of how much stabilizing to invoke. Generally speaking, normal is for focal lengths up to about 100mm, active for above that. Read full review...

Good travel lens. Focuses quickly.

The telephoto range was perfect for sight seeing. I could get good overall photos and then zoom in for better detail right away. It is also good in a room with people at different distances. Autofocus was quick and fussy. Pictures were sharp and clear.

Jack of all trade ... master of none ... still good ...

Excellent range, decent sharpness, fairly compact, not to expensive, all around good walk-about lens for Nikon DX cameras. Not crazy heavy, expensive, and large like 18-300mm, comparable to 16-85mm in terms of sharpness, gives up 2 degrees at the wide angle for longer reach - 85mm versus 200mm. Better build quality and comparable sharpness as newer 18-140mm zoom. Better than 3rd party all-in-one zooms ala Sigma or Tamron, less reach but beyond 200mm, they all look like crap.Read full review...

Great "1 Lens for all Situations"

I love this lens! I had an older Nikon D50 with three lenses to capture my shots. The downside was traveling with all of the gear. I love having one lens that will work for everything. I travel a lot and wanted to have just one lens that would serve me in all situations. This lens has worked perfectly for me. I can't believe it took me so long to get one.
I would highly recommend this lens if you are looking for the "One lens" solution.

A good lens for the money.

There are plenty of opinions out there on these types of lenses. Lovers and haters. The Pros say get a fixed prime lens. Or get the 400-600 lens that costs $6,000. And their reasons are pretty sound. But for those whose budget isn't quite that big or don't require that level of equipment, the Nikon 18-200 is a decent lens. I was able to get decent quality pictures throughout it's entire range. No, it's not perfect, but it was good enough for the work I required it to do. You can still produce very good work with this lens. And for the price, this lens is actually quite good.
