The ultimate intersection of quality and value lens

This lens will give you the finest quality at the best value and especially so if you're using it on a full frame camera. In terms of quality it tops other lens that cost thousands of dollars and it is so lightweight that it is my standard lens for serious hiking and backpacking.

The focus is lightning quick and quiet and I love the signature cool Nikon styling. The photo is sharp, high contrast and rich in color just the way I like it. The only improvement that I could ask for is if it can be stopped down further than f/16. I carry a tripod with me and for picturesque mountainscape and scenic scenery, it will be nice if I can shoot at f/20 or higher and since I am using a tripod I can shoot at very low shutter speed to compensate. Being able to shoot at smaller aperture than f/20 is also good for long exposure photography as well. Other than this wish list, this lens is as good as it gets for a price that is simply unbeatable.

Great lens for Ametuers!

I love this lens, it's my first non-stock lens.

I find my photos are better by leaps and bounds and look more professional thanks to the ability to open the aperture to 1.8-2.5. It makes it easy to blur the background and make photos of people look so much better.

I am aware this is a "lazy" way to get such pictures, but being a non-professional who does not have the time to spend several hours learning photographic composition and the complex relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO right now, my run of the mill photos look awesome!

And in the future, as I learn with this camera (Nikon D3300), it seems from other reviews that this lens can do so much more. I'm very excited and totally recommend this.

Good all-around lens.

I wanted a high quality compact zoom lens for a Nikon D200. This one fills the bill nicely. The one I got on eBay was indeed in pristine condition, and "like new" in every respect. I kind of doubt that I will ever need or want any other lens for this camera. Sharp images, easy switching to manual mode, image stabilization, smooth and powerful zoom, compact, light weight, very versatile-- this would be a great lens for an "f8 and be there" type of approach to photography.Read full review...

Perfect walk around lens for the D600.

I bought this lens on the reccommendation of a friend. A very good friend, as it turns out! This lens is very economical, under $175.00, brand spankin' new! I think it's under priced! On my D600, this lens produces some super-sharp images. The autofocus is quick and dead on. The color rendition is superb! I realize that much of this quality is the camera, but I am so pleased with the sharpness, color rendition and contrast that this lens, in combination with the camera produce, that I am keeping this lens on at all times! I have also tried it on my D7100 and gotten some fabulous portraits. The skin tones are just perfect. I love this lens and am selling my other three 50mm lens. Nikon got it all right with this lens. It's very light weight, which means a lot of plastic, but with minimum care, I think this lens will be a favorite for years to come!Read full review...

Very happy!

I haven't used it much yet, but the pictures that I have taken are very clear. I'm getting used to the fixed focus. I'm new to photography involving more than a "point and shoot". This was a great inexpensive way to begin to upgrade the lenses that came with my Nikon d3400. Also, I received my purchase even quicker than the time given at time of purchase.Read full review...

A beautiful lens

An excellent value on a beautiful, pro-lens! It hasn't come off the camera since it arrived. I keep thinking, "maybe I should go back to the zoom for this" then I reposition my head or walk a few steps forward and keep shooting. Beautiful depth of field bokeh, super fast lens. I find myself increasing the shutter speed and stopping down the lens compared to what I'm used to shooting with the kit lens. Some people prefer the 35mm for portraits on a DX body, I prefer a slightly flatter look from the 50mm. Also, this one gives just enough throw for distant action. If you only buy one camera lens, this is the one.Read full review...

Fast, sharp, low profile, Great in low light and action related.

It is a great lens for portraits and action alike. I have used it for some theatre photography, and it was great! No flash needed. Stay in aperture priority mode. Set it to 1.8 to 2.5, set to a decently high ISO like 1600 or 3200, and you are ready for a variety of shots in a low to medium light theatre.Read full review...

Great prime lens

I have a Nikon D5500 that I am using this with and I am loving it. The only downfall is that my camera doesn't have a full frame sensor so the images are very zoomed in. I have to stand about 6 to 8 ft away. But that has nothing to do with the lens. It has to do with camera. So if you are new to photography keep this in mind. The D3000 series and D5000 series do not have full frame sensor. The good thing is that when I upgrade the body of my Camera this lens will just get that much better.

Great lens! I love having better aperture control than my kit lenses. I love getting that perfect blur on my pictures.

Favorite lens EVER!!

I was a little hesitant about ordering this lens from ebay just because it was at such a discount. But I've never had a problem with ebay before, so I went for it. I got the lens super fast! Like within 3 days. It came in it's original box, packaged properly, it came with a lens cover and lens hood! This is an excellent lens! It takes very sharp, clear images with awesome bokeh!! Which is what I was going for when buying my 50mm. This has become my everyday lens! Thanks alot!! :)Read full review...

You COULD get a faster 50mm lens... but why?

The Nikkor F1.8 50mm lAF-S prime lens is the best value in the Nikon DX world. It is light, crisp, durable and at a price of well under $200, not to be beaten by any lens on the market. Whether I am using the lens for macro product photography, wedding portraiture, senior photography or fashion, it bring to bear everything you need to great photography ... except the photographer's creative eye. You'll have to bring that yourself. Do yourself a favor... get one.Read full review...
