Nikon 17-35 tragically underrated

Incredible lens for the price if you understand it's limitations. This is my favorite lens to leave on my camera and I love wide angle shots. If you shoot it wide open at night for astrophotography or in bright light then check the corners you will find falloff and softness. However, for half the price of a used 16-35 the compromise is worth it. It's so well made it's a work of art. You can find morons on YouTube babbling about how bad this lens is all day long but if you actually like to take pictures you'll love this lens. There's a reason why nikon still makes it today. nikon nikkor 17-35mm lens

enter the beast!
if you are looking for something cheap, small and built poorly, there are many offerings from other lens manufacturers in this configuration.
but none, like this one. the 17-35 brilliantly merely doubles its focal length and thus allows the intelligent use of optic configuration to make this the lens that every nikon user, from film cameras to digital bodies, the one to use.
fast af focusing, large zoom and manual focusing rings. aperture control on the lens, as it is a D model make this an exceptional optical performer.

the performance, at all apertures is sharp, from edge to edge. excellent contrast and something you never want to drop on your foot! this is one of the few lenses that will serve 99% of all photo applications.

Incredible lens

I use the Nikon 17-35 f2.8 lens on both my d810 and d500.
This is s great lens! Nikon still makes them new, due to demand and they sell them for almost $2,000.00 dollars!
I like the ability to use 77mm filters, unlike with the Nikon 14-24 f2.8. Even just to be able to put a clear protection filter.
I would buy this lens again.
I also own the Nikon 20-35 f2.8, the predecessor to the 17-35. The 17-35 is much better than the 20-35 in range, focus speed and sharpness.

Superb Lens - Sharp Edge to Edge at Most Focal Lengths - Very Substantial

Superb edge to edge sharpness, with excellent image resolution even wide open (f2.8) and at most focal lengths. Fills a great range of fixed lens settings too. Not sure how I can fault this lens in function, but by itself it's one heavy hunk of glass and with the case it becomes a little bit of a storage issue when going mobile (backpack or daypack). Overall, excellent lens and a great value if you can find it in good condition used. Read full review...

Nice Lens

I read a lot of reviews about what type of lens to buy for a wide angle low F stop lens. After reading the reviews by professional and amateur photographers, I decided to move forward with the 17-35 mm wide angel f2.8 lens. I use different types of filters in my photography, this was another reason to purchase this particular lens. It does have 77mm filter size like my other lens so need to purchase different sizes of filters. The lens has a smooth, noise free focus. Unlike some of the reviews I read were it was factor. Pictures are clear and crisp. I have only taken a few pictures with it. I will be taking it to shoot some winter landscapes tomorrow. The only draw back so far is the weight of the lens.Read full review...

My favorite lens!

I absolutely love this lens! Super sharp and I love the focal length range. The downside of course is that it is heavy but thats what it takes to make a very durable, high quality lens. I use this lens more than any other and am consistently happy with the results. It's tough to beat this work horse wide angle zoom.Read full review...

Overall a great solid old-school lens

The only down side to my lens is it can't seem to control the apeture from the camera (Even with the apeture ring set to f22.) It just needs to be changed manually but I wouldn't say that is a deal-breaker. It is a high quality wide angle zoom and works great in low light at f2.8. I would recommend this lens and with how solid it is it will still outlive the newer versions (16-35mm full format nikkor)Read full review...

Outstanding wide lens for film or digital

In picking a wide to mid range lens for my d70, I came upon a choice between the ultra wide 12-24mm nikon, a few 3rd party brands, and the semi-wide angle 17-35 and 17-55 2.8. Of course, that extra 5mm (or even slightly more on some brands) may make it worth it to grab the 12-24mm. It doesn't sound like a lot but the difference is quite astonishing. However, if you don't fit into this category and picture yourself as one who uses digital with yearnings for film (or perhaps a luddite), look no further than the 17-35mm. Everything you hear about this lens is probably true, excellent sharpness, great out-of-focus area, not as great wide open better stopped down etc. The lens is a tank and almost eliminated the camera shake I experienced with lighter lenses on the d70 and the quietness/quickness of the AF-S zoom is superb if you've never had one before. Takes 77mm filters which means you can pop them on and off most of the higher end lenses like the 80-200mm 2.8 and 70-200mm etc.

While it isn't a super wide angle on a digital, I like the focal length on the d70 and it has given me nothing but great shots. The best part is, you can pop it on your F100, F5, or another film body and take great shots (some say better) even wider. I personally like this ability as I still love black and white film and would like all my really good lenses to be compatible just in case I take that plunge and actually bid on that F5 on ebay.

Good lens but autofocus squeaks

Takes good quality photos. Adjustments are smooth. Makes an annoying squeak when auto focus operates most of the time.

A quality built lens

Very pleased with the all-metal Nikon AF-S 17-35 F2.8 D zoom. A quality lens with great optics. Designed to last for years and will likely outlast another camera. A little heavier than current plastic models but not an issue. Very well packaged.Read full review...
