Hey, I put this on my commuter bike ( REI Big Buzz ) with a new chain and shimano freewheel , and it works !
I'm not racing to work on this thing. Its a beast of burden with paniers and rack, 35 cm tires on back and 32 cm on the front , so I don't need super quick shifts. Just reliable gear changes and that's what I get with this set up.
The total cost of the chain ring , freewheel and chain was under a C note.
