Excellent RPG Experience

I’m a lifelong video game player (in my late 30’s) and I do not typically play turn-based RPGs. However, the graphics, music, story, combat system and multiple characters all combine to make Octopath Traveler a compelling piece worthy of your gaming hours. The combat system is easy to catch onto, the enemies come in several varieties, and you have the option to fight in a party or alone. The 8 characters involved also have their own stories and purposes for existing, with none feeling like a repeat of another. Finally, the graphics and music coalesce to produce an atmosphere found in few other games of any genre. Taken together, the team at Square Enix has produced a game that is a must-play for RPG fans and can only be classified as a “Winner” of a game.Read full review...

The graphics are great, but unfortunately everything else feels a bit underwhelming

I love the 16-bit graphics mixed with modern effects, but the gameplay feels like I've seen it all before. Random battles. And none of the stories have thus far been anything special. Will update this if the game throws any surprises at me but I'm disappointed in this one.Read full review...

It's fantastic, beyond words!

Octopath Traveler is one of, if not the best RPG's on the Switch. The graphics while not realistic have a beautiful color palette and are more about subtlety than flash. That's not to say it doesn't show itself off because it certainly does. It just doesn't do it unnecessarily, only when it's appropriate.

It's a lenthy RPG so you'll be getting yo your money's worth and then some. You could definitely replay it and switch up the order in which you find your various travelers.

It plays like a late to mid 90's RPG like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. Though it has a break mechanic all it's own. Basically hitting enemies with a weapon or magic that it's weak against will make the enemy dazed and nets you an extra turn. Learn this mechanic and do it well and enemies won't get turns. That's not to sah it's easy to do because later enemies take more hits to get past their defense. It's eash to play but difficult to master.

The music is on par with some of the best in gaming, it's that good.

If you like SNES era games you'll love this one.

An amazing RPG for the Switch!

Wow! An RPG that is challenging and presents the player with options and paths? Yes please!

Just to be fair, this is more 'old school' than most modern RPGs, but it is a wonderfully fun and challenging game. Your characters all have interesting stories, and you get to play through them all if you like. Of course there is very little interaction between the characters, and in this regard the game is very similar to Saga Frontier games - only this game has an excellent battle system.

Unlike Bravely Default (with a battle system that started out fun and then became tedious), this game has a system where you seek enemy weaknesses to cause them to miss a turn - very much like Shin Megami Tensei games. Boss battles can be long and require strategy.

You have the option to skip through story scenes, so on replay it is much quicker.

Also I really prefer the original Japanese voices - and thankfully there is an option to use the Japanese with subtitles.

This is a wonderful game, a lot of fun, very artistic and challenging. It is not a near perfect old school RPG game like Shin Megami Tensei IV or Persona 5, but this is a worthy purchase for fans of classic RPGs or new fans interested in a classic style RPG.

Octopath

This game truly is something else. I was looking for a game to get lost in. I wanted the feeling of days seeming like minutes. I have not felt that since Breath of the Wild. This game gave me that feeling, and I must say it is one of the best games on the switch. If you are hesitant because of the graphical style do not be; this is a full fledged title that lasts at least 60 hours to complete. I highly recommend it.Read full review...

Return to RPG style.

It's a great return to classic Final Fantasy RPG games with the turn based fighting style. It's a large world to explore and there's random enemy encounters. There are eight different characters in the game, each with their own story. You are granted the ability to choose a single character to start with, who you choose at the start becomes your party leader, but you still encounter the others during the course of the game and see their stories.

The problem with the game is that it does become redundant over time since the gameplay doesn't change at all, and the difficulty spikes quickly. In other words, you're going to be doing a lot of grinding between sections of the stories, so you're going to have to be patient with it.

Overall, it's an intriguing story, and if you like turn-based RPGs this is a nice return to form.

Must own for any traditional RPG fan!

Endearing visuals, engaging battle system, beautiful sound track, multiple story lines to follow.

Granted, Some of the story lines are more interesting than others but that is what makes this game great. You have 8 characters to choose from, you can add the ones you like the most to your party and just focus on them. You will be hooked for long hours.Read full review...

Classic rpg style with modern day polish!

Very unique story telling style, through all 8 characters. The different characters varying skills and abilities keep you wanting to continue leveling to see how the next skill will work! I have sunk quite a few hours into this game, and am nowhere near the end. Just taking my time, enjoying all the awesome side quests and beautiful sprite graphics!Read full review...

Must have!

Amazing game, it reminds me of older Final Fantasy titles with all the new-school gaming changes they could of benefited from.
The story lines from the different characters are all very captivating and tailored to their character's class and there is PLENTY of side quests!
Lots to do, I love it!

Great game for this generation

Look anywhere and you’ll see that this game it’s an instant classic already. If you can afford the wayfarers edition, buy it, it will cost a lot more in a few years. I have postponed playing other games that I have in my backlog just to play this game.Read full review...

Play it!!

What I initially thought to be a fun game to help tide me over to the autumn, actually became my favorite game of 2018 and one of my favorite RPGs ever! I love the polished look of SNES graphics similar to games like Chrono Trigger! It's nostalgic yet new at the same time. The gameplay, stories, and characters are all fantastic. And the music! I'd honestly say that this game is worth it for the OST alone! I sunk 95 hours into this game during the past summer on just the main story, and I'm not even a completionist. The demo on the Switch eShop was what got me hooked, later I purchased it at full price during launch. Absolutely no regrets!Read full review...
