Better that a Canon

I have 1 Olympus SP 565, but it has some problem with the LCD screen, looks like an ink stay inside the top right corner of the LCD screen. I also have 1 brand new Olympus SP 565, I'm saving it until you can't find an Olympus SP 565 anywhere. I wanted to get a good used 1, so I could get my used 1 fixed, if it's possible. So far the 1 I ordered from Ebay is working fine. 1 Pro is the batteries are AA's which aren't hard to find. I like how the LCD screen is so clear & you can change the setting by using the buttons on the back, instead of having to go to the settings mode. Only con I can see is when you use it for so long, the words on the back buttons want to fade away. Other that that, it seems really good. I'd like to find another Kodak Z612, I've have mine for years & it's about wore out.Read full review...

Closest thing to my Ideal Camera

The Olympus SP 565 is is one of 2 favorite cameras I own. The ideal camera in my mind is one with (1) lower MP - because I take a lot of photos, (2) with a viewfinder so I can see what I'm about to take every time!, (3) AA batteries that I can get anywhere (4) and nice optical zoom for landscape shots. This one is great - except for macro shots which I struggle to get it to do. Otherwise this is a really wonderful camera!Read full review...

good, not great...but probably the best deal for under $200 with 10 MP

Its a decent camera, not as close to a SLR as I would have expected from the reviews I read before buying. But pretty decent anyway. I bought the telephoto and macro lens adapters, they are not worth spending the money for, the camera has enough lens capacity without them and they are hard to get a decent photo with. Low light is the cameras week point, I dont like using a flash as it washes out the photo. My Fuji MX2900 would take much better low light photos, you just had to hold the camera really still. This camera does not seem to do it as well in the auto mode. It probably would in the manual mode, but I have not played with that yet. The panaroma feature is nice and it takes good photos with the rapid fire feature. I paid $150 for this used and it came with a new set of rechargeable batterys, charger and case. It looks and functions like new. So all and all a decent deal. 10MP is fine for the photos I take and it downloads right to my laptop with out unplugging the card.Read full review...

Good Camera but 3 limitations reduce usefulness

I just want to warn potential users of three drawbacks to this camera. I had an earlier, good version 5060 but Olympus sent me this one to replace it when they said it was not repairable after 4 years of use. (I was no longer made). The 5060 had a movable video screen so you could view it from many angles, but this one does not.
1. You can't add an external microphone to this, thus I find the internal mic not to be good when I want a more directional or wide angle mic.
2. There is no hotshoe for an external flash, so you are stuck with the internal flash which only goes out about 10 feet in darkened rooms.
3. The stupid designers turned off the zoom capability if you are in movie mode, thus you have to STOP a video recording, zoom in or out, and start another file. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID.

Tip: This camera only uses on memory card format, the Olympus proprietary xD memory cards but they only have a max of 1 or 2gb which is not enough for longer video sessions. But, if you get the xD conversion card with a micro sd card, you can get up to 8gb, which I have never exceeded. However, I have found that xD cards and the conversion card for micro SD cards doesn't work well in many card slots designed for them, so I have to use the provided cable to offload pictures rather than move the card form the camera to a PC or card hub.

Olympus SP 565

A Nice little camera - we bought a used one to replace our old one after my wife had spent a lot of time looking at new cameras. We thought the old one had been lost or stolen until I was cleaning up our BBQ area and found the poor thing overgrown in the weeds. We must have used it to take photos back in Summer left it out there!

My wife likes the SLR look and feel of it.

Everything Old is New !!!

This camera has great features and is perfect for the novice or professional. The zoom picture quality and sharpness are spectacular. This not a simple point and shoot, there are a lot of custom features so that you can tailor your shots. I recommend this camera.Read full review...

Serious Bang for your Bucks!

I've had my eye on this camera since early '09 when I saw a review of it in Playboy. I've always like Olympus cameras and was most recently using an Olympus FE series point and shoot until I moved up to the SP 565. And what a move!

The SP565 has an amazing array of features and functions! You can basically control everything manually if you want or you can choose the auto option (or from 20+ preset modes)and let the camera do all the work for you. The camera feels solid, fits nicely in the hand and overall functionality is quite good. While accessing certain menus/functions can get a bit cumbersome that's only because there are so many options to choose from. I firmly believe that it is hard to have too much of a good thing. And again, you can access the auto and/or preset modes quickly and easily.

So far I have been extremely impressed with this camera, especially given what I paid (less than $250; buyer claimed to have taken less than 50 shots with it). This model has apparently been discontinued by Olympus (they already came out with a newer/26x Ultra Zoom model- the SP590 UZ) which I think is a real shame.

Great Camera...

This is the most bang for the buck you can get in a personal camera... small size with BIG performance. Stable and Great ZOOM.

A well made long range zoom point and shoot camera

The Olympus SP 565 with its improved info screen and boosted image quality to 10 MP is a step up over previous models. The changed menus do take some getting used to. The camera also has an annoying feature of telling you it can't take a picture for some absurd reason, but an experienced photographer can overcome this with some manipulation. Olympus ships the camera with a cheap useless thin strap. The cast aluminum body gives the camera a solid feel and is superior to the cheap plastic appearance of the corresponding Nikon Coolpix model.Read full review...

Great Camera

Very good quality inexpensive shoot what you see camera. It is not as fast as an SLR but is easy to use and has a built in guide for specific shooting conditions. The 20X zoom is really nice. I had an Olympus C700 2 MP camera and the SP565 is very similar but with more features and 10MP. Mine is refurbished but looks and works like new. I also own an Olympus Stylus 300 and 400 with the underwater case which I use while scuba diving.Read full review...
