Capturing lightning in a bottle--the second time around

How often does a remake of a classic TV show come along that matches or even surpasses the original? Such is the case with The Outer Limits. Originally aired from 1963-1965, the show ran for two seasons and some 45 episodes. Like other genre shows, the Outer Limits struggled during its initial network run on ABC but gained cult classic status in syndication.

Three decades after its cancellation, the Outer Limits was revived, first on Showtime and later on the Sci-Fi Channel (now SYFY), running for five seasons to much critical acclaim. This six-disc collection draws from the latter revival series, offering up 36 episodes that represent the best of what the series had to offer. Each double-sided DVD contains six episodes, centering around a common theme--aliens, sex, death, time travel, monsters, robots--that were staples of both the original and the revival series. As a bonus, each disc also contains interviews with the producers.

This boxed collection does not contain the complete series, nor any one complete seasons. Those are also available. Rather, this collection represents a 'filet' of the new Outer Limits, drawn from its entire five-season run. The individual discs are also available separately. If you are looking for a nice introduction or overview to the new Outer Limits, this is definitely the set for you--but be warned, it will leave you hungry for more!

What's Right With Sci-Fi?

It has been a long while since I've thought about this great series. Yes, to be honest I first got into the series when I was a bit younger but that is what grabbed my attention the first time I saw that outer limits episode. I was aware of the original series that came out during my father's time but in my opinion, this contemporary telling beat the original hands down. I remember when the show was cancelled and I thought to myself, 'how could they cancel such an excellent sci-fi show, one which embodied the entire idea of what it was to be sci-fi'. I hoped for the day in which the entire series would be available on VHS (lol, yes, DVDs were a bit too expensive for my teenage blood) but to no avail. I waited and waited and soon forgot altogether my dreams of owning the entire series. All was not right with the world. I began binge drinking to forget my anxieties and began participating in all night hotel romps (please tell me you've picked up on my sarcasm by now, lol). The opportunity presented itself on a warm march day on ebay. The thing I enjoyed the most about the series is how it humanized a lot of the episodes. Far be it from being anything but human (the alien attacks, robots, supernatural experiences, etc.) the series still managed to incorporate the light and dark sides of human nature into every episode which leaves you thinking, "Am I capable of such beauty? Am I capable of such hate or destruction?" The series touches onto something personal within each and every one of us. We are left with and privaledged to a single instantaneous moment of life and self reflection. Then it is off to our 9 to 5 day jobs or that pile of dishes you were meaning to get to after dinner. In my opinion, The Outer Limits: The New Series is one of the most influential pieces of science fiction works in recent times and should be treated as such.Read full review...

The Outer Limits The New TV Series Surpasses the Original Series I its Originality and Depth

The new series, which unfortunately lasted only one season, is much more satisfying scientifically than some of the more ridiculous science in episodes on the original Outer Limits, which is why I eschew the latter completely.

All of the episodes are thought-provoking and tend to have surprise endings. Some not necessarily happy endings for the main characters involved. There are twists in the episodes that are often surprising, sometimes up to the last moment in the episode. This makes for high drama.

The following themes are explored in the series: Aliens Among Us, Death & Beyond, Fantastic Androids and Robots, Mutation and Transformation, Sex and Science Fiction, and Time Travel & Infinity.

I highly recommend this series for serious science fiction fans who want to see a touch of scientific speculation that is either realistic or seems plausible in the future. Awesome stuff.

Good produst but not a complete boxset.

This set itself serves as a "best of" boxset and not a full series boxset. It spans 6 disks with 6 episodes per disk. A total of 36 episodes coming from all seasons of the new series.

The box and DVD cases are beautifully designed and the box itself is fairly sturdy. The disks are written on a double sided DVD. While playing the DVD, you can choose what episode to play, what chapter to play of that episode or what special feature to play. The one issue I have with the box set is that this series does not have all of the good episodes.Read full review...

Outer Limits (New Series, 6 DVD set)

I don't know if i ever watched the original Outer Limits, but I certainly got into the new series whenever i caught it on Showtime Beyond. It is definitely what Sci-fi is all about; aliens, mutations, robots, time travel, etc.

My set has 6 disks each with a different theme, with about 6 episodes on each. The disks are double sided, which saves space in the case; with a side A & B. Fortunately, all my favorite episodes are included along with a few I hadn't seen before. Even though my set isn't the entire series, it's good enough for me or any fan of the show. Perhaps someday I might look into getting the entire series, but this set is certainly excellent enough that there isn't much desire for that yet.
Anyone who loves this show but doesn't have the dough for the entire series should pick up the 6 disk set. you certainly can't beat the price, for such an excellent set.

Outer Limit confusion-the new series.

If this is the first item you buy for the new series you are in good shape. If you buy the First Year of the new series you will have already seen 10 of what is on this antholgy. This would be if you have the 5 disc version. If you have the seven disc version you will probably have more duplication. The series was on for eight years and one can only wonder why they donot offer years 2-8. Confusing? Yes, but still good.Read full review...

The Best S-F Ever!

When I was a kid I used to record Outer Limits and watch it all over... I don't like the newere parts very much so it was great to find this collection of older ones. Each 45-minutes piece is a whole story, most of them end up in the way you'd never expect. All fans of s-f MUST watch it!

The only bad thing about it is that... they are both-sided DVD's and I do not know the way to tell which side is which, so sometimes I must take it out and in again :-)
