Very surprised

To start off with, the thought of watching (and reading) a movie with subtitles has always put me off a bit. I was one of those who thought that movies are to be enjoyed not be something you have to 'work' at. Anyway, with that said, after reading the many positive reveiews that this movie received, I decided to give it a try. I was actually very surprised. The story was complex yet easy enough to follow. I personally enjoyed following little Ofelia (sp) on her journeys in to the labyrinth, awaiting at what secrets were to be laid before her (us) next. The story at times can be quite gruesome, and maybe just a little unsettling but that also tells the story of plight that she (and many more) went thru. I originally bought this movie on DVD and never watched it (I still have the sealed version in my video cabinet), but the more I read about it, the more I decided I wanted to watch it on my blu-ray player. So yes, I finally bit the bullet and re-purchased the blu-ray disc. And it was a very worthwhile investment. I plan on watching Pan's Labyrinth again, in the very near future, because I want to take in all of the wonderful details that went into making it. And I can't stress it enough...do NOT let the fact that this is a movie with subtitles throw you off. It is well worth the price of admission into...Pan's Labyrinth.Read full review...

del toro's best work to date

This is one of my favorites movies of all time for the reason that it's a fairy tale set during a spanish civil war. how does one make reasoning of such setting and expect it to work ? well.. guillermo del toro is a genius and this is his best work in my opinion. He combines heavy fantasy themes and puts it in this raw dark place of war and chaos... and balances everything out so well that towards the end of the film, you're completely immersed in this realm of beauty and darkness. The special effects are some of the best to date and I really enjoy how Del toro combines CGI with real life actors and body suits/prosthetics and props. it kinda gives the CGI more authenticity and really elevates the monsters and creations to a more organic level. Honestly, I never really noticed any transition from real life to CGI and that is a good thing because heavy cgi use tends to get stupid. The acting is top notch by the whole ensemble and the spanish cast is very talented. If you like good movies and incredible stories that entertain and remind you of what going to the movies is all about, I strongly recommend this flick... do yourself a favor and check it out.. unless you're some ignorant fucking specie and in that case, it's prolly too late for you. cheersRead full review...

Great flick for those with strong stomachs

Guillermo Del Toro provides yet another great movie! Based in a Civil War-torn Spain, Pan's Labyrinth raisees the standard of foreign & domestic films. Filmed entirely in true Spanish, this wonderful fairy tale explains the story of a young, imaginative girl who has to deal with a sick mother, evil step-father, and eventually a baby brother. Expertly directed with amazing quality and special effects, Pan's Labyrinth is sure to please those looking for a great watch with a deeply involved story.

Those that can get squeemish to gore should beware. Brutally violent and graphic, this film might have those with weak stomachs finding themselves looking away at times or covering their eyes.

Wonderful score, actors, cinematography and story. I highly recommend Pan's Labyrinth to those willing to read subtitles or understand Spanish.

War & Fary tail

As many have said before, to which I also say. It's an adult type of Fary tail. It deals with war & young girl imagination that takes her on a get away from what's going on around her. Her mother is married & pregnant by a violent man of war, whose main concern is the war & the baby he is expecting. He doesn't care about his wife or the young girl & they know it, but they stay because he provides for them. The young girl do not like him or trust him, she's only concerned about her mother & her baby brother that she is carrying. This is a war movie, but the fairy tale come in by the young girls imagination, which is her way of dealing with her unhappy life.Read full review...

Great Creative Movie

This is a great movie. It is all in spanish but that takes nothing away from the movie. It might even add to it. The subtitbles are easy to read and don't distract from the amazing thematics.
r>The movie itself is amazing with a good strong story and some spectacular scenes. The story is well told and easy to understand but after watching it several times you realize that their are many levels to the story that slowly unravel for you. It is one that I highly reccomend to everyone I know.Read full review...

Great Imagination. Director usually has a very unique approach at story telling and cinematography. Don't really know much more than that as I havent even had a chance to see it yet because I've been so busy as of late, am just filing this thing out so ebay can leave me alone. Oh ea I heard it was a very cool flick to begin with...that's why I bought it.Read full review...

It was quite a tale! The Spainish of the old country had to deal with true facism; not like spoiled americans and losers fighting so call facists!

Guillermo Del Toro is messed up in the head and although that's 'not good': He does make some believably scary monsters!

Stunning, well-rounded, excellent

Why did I give it 5 stars? My reason is simple. You don't win six Academy Awards and make three dozen national critics' "Top Ten Films Of (insert year; in this case, 2006)" by being subpar.

Visually stunning, it's truly a fairy tale for adults. I emphasize that second piece because while the bright colors and childhood innocence of Ofelia are immediately evident, they are overshadowed by the mature tones of the aggressive, indifferent, foul-mouthed Captain.

I'll caution you must be open-minded when it comes to cinema and allow your suspension of disbelief. It is a fantasy/sci-fi/pseudo-action/drama movie.

This movie is excellent.

Movie of fantasy for adults, plenty of special features

Movie is a Spanish fantasy that takes place during the Spanish Civil War. Fantasy film with interesting characters, good story, very believable violent scenes, good art work and CGI, and an unexpected ending (at least for me). This movie has won several international awards thats why I wanted to see it, I recommend this film for people who like fantasy and in my opinion, the violent scenes kind of makes this movie a fantasy for adults, unique in that aspect something I havent seenRead full review...
