Loved this book!
I read this book as a child, or at least I thought I had - turns out I must've read the Readers Digest Condensed version - there were things in it I definitely would've remembered had I read them before! I purchased it because my book club was reading it. It's an insightful story about a girl growing up poor in early 20th century Brooklyn, with her younger brother, alcoholic "Irish singing waiter" father, and stoic, hardworking, but loving, mother. Francie's parents' hopes for their children's education include a novel "savings bank", a clever strategy for attending a better grammar school, and dogged determination. Imaginative Francie's and down-to-earth Neely's adventures and coming of age are warmly and frankly told. If you're a book lover, like me, you'll appreciate Francie's plan to read every book in the local public library from A to Z. Highly recommended.Read full review...

Tree Grows in Brooklyn
A wonderful story about the lives of immigrants and their first generation USA born children in the early 1900's. I purchased this book because my woman's club decided to read it over the summer for a Sept. group discussion. It should be an interesting get together.Read full review...

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
I first read this book in 8th grade (actually 29 years ago!) and have read it numerous times since. If you want a feel for what it was like to live in the Great Depression, this is a must read!!!
