Different!!!

Requires an expansion pak!!! Be warned!!! Perfect Dark has been a key franchise component to Rare Games. Joanna Dark was the Lara Croft of the 1st person shooter until Samus stole the show in Metroid Prime. Perfect Dark was her game. The game starts out slow with training and things I could easily find out on my own but suffered through anyway. After that the game picks up rather well. Graphics are as slightly better than Goldeneye and the controls are pretty solid too. A small amount of stealth is involved but not a whole lot and all the levels are usually dark and dreary. Multiplayer is a big part of the game as well. This is not Goldeneye but it is close and tries to be unique enough to put it in a separate class. But I was never really a great fan. I was playing Half-life before I got to play Perfect Dark so my expectations were smashed to the ground. This is still a must have though for any N64 owner or Rare fan especially if you already invested in an expansion pak. 4/5Read full review...

Best First-Person-Shooter on the N64

I could say that the condition of the cartridge was good, but that would be too boring. Instead, let’s talk about the game itself. And oh boy, what a game! After spending a lot of time playing Goldeneye, the production quality of Perfect Dark went way up! It was made on the same engine as Goldeneye, but this time there’s full cutscenes, voice acting, and an original story! They even added some new features such as holding the A button bring up a menu that shows all of your weapons, and holding the B button to activate the secondary firing mode! However, there are some things I should mention that gamers should consider when purchasing Perfect Dark. Unless you’re buying it on Xbox 360 or Xbox One, the frame rate sometimes has the tendency to drop below 12 frames per second, specifically when you’re running it in hi-res mode or if you’re playing multiplayer. Other than that, the target frame rate seems to be 30 fps (and occasionally 60 fps when there’s practically nothing on screen). Also, if you want to play the full single-player campaign with all of the game’s features, you must have the N64 Expansion Pak. However, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue since most N64 owners should have one anyway, especially since some games support it. Personally though, these minor flaws didn’t hinder my experience with the game. The way I see it, Perfect Dark is the best first-person-shooter on the N64!Read full review...

Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64)

Perfect Dark is easily one of the best and most memerable Nintendo 64 games. In the shooter category, many would consider it second only to 007: Goldeneye. The gameplay is smooth and fluid, with excellent graphics. The single player experience is fun and involving, innovative and just plain cool weapons steal the show here. Althought that is not to say the missions and objectives aren't great, but the game does lose a little bit of pace due to slight repetition. The environments also significantly add to the experience, especially since the expansion pak is required. The expansion pak, which increases the 64's maximum RAM, allows higher resolution graphics and creates great environments. Some early on scenery is plain, but overall this game certainly pushes the Nintendo 64 to its limits. The biggest gripe about the single player are the frustratingly unintelligent computer opponents (AI). Many times the AI can be seen doing absolutely ridiculous things, which dampens the experience. Finally, and possibly the most important aspect of this game, the multiplayer. The multiplayer in Perfect Dark is so superb, it still rivals some of today's best multiplayer games such as Halo and Call of Duty. Again, the innovative and awesome weapons come together with great maps and lots of match customization to create an experience you will always remember. Allowing up to four players, the matches can get quite intense. Especially since adding computer controlled "bots" are always an option - great if you don't have four players and still want a more competitive match. Overall, Perfect Dark is an amazing and unforgettable experience. I strongly reccommend it, as it has something to offer for nearly everyone.Read full review...

PERFECT Dark

Do I even need to review this game? The game pretty much reviewed itself. The title of the game says it all. Perfect Dark. I have nothing bad to say.

First off, the single player campaign is awesome. The cut scenes are great, the story is great, the action is great, sometimes you sneak around and other times you blast your way through.

The combat simulator is awesome too. You get to make a profile and customize what your character looks like. You also get to choose from many maps, game types and what weapons are on the map. There are tons of weapons to choose from. I guess my only problem with the game is the remote mines. Even when the CPU simulants are on the hardest difficulty, they won't blow up the remote mines they throw. Oh well. The simulator also keeps track of a lot of stats, like kills, deaths, accuracy, wins, etc. Also, you get to rank up as you play more games, kill more people and win games. I'm not sure what the formula is for ranking up, but it happens.

You can also go to a shooting range and some crazy simulator. By performing tasks in each, you can unlock new stuff for the combat simulator. There is a ton of stuff to unlock and just the shooting range can keep you busy for hours.

This was an awesome game back when it was released and it's an awesome game to play today. It still ranks up in my top 5 shooters of all time. What's my other 4? Maybe I'll do that review at some point.

A great game, considering it's nearly 10 years old

I bought this game, because I just recently repurchased a Nintendo 64, and this is a game I used to own. It is a sequel, of sorts, to Goldeneye 007... the classic Nintendo 64 first-person shooter. While the sci-fi story has nothing to do with James Bond, the gameplay is the same. If you liked that one, you should like Perfect Dark. One warning, though -- make sure you own the Memory Expansion Pak before buying this game. While it's possible to play this game without it, the single-player game is inaccessible, and the multi-player is extremely limited (you can only use two "bots," if memory serves).Read full review...

Perfect Dark for Nintendo 64

Spiritual sequel to GoldenEye. Starring special agent Joanna DarkT, the storyline, is brought to life by outstanding cinemas and surprisingly good voice-acting. Shooting, with some snazzy new weapons, is still the primary focus of the game, but with all of the tasks and puzzles to get through, you'll have to use your brain as well as your trigger finger to get by. It is in this way, that Perfect Dark, pays the ultimate respect to GoldenEye. Rare took so many steps to differentiate this game from its three year old predecessor, but the one thing that is consistent over both games, is the extraordinary depth and rich gameplay. If you didn't play GE, you might have a hell of a time learning how a game like PD thinks and what kind of behavior is rewarded.

Perfect Dark 64 is rated by many as one of the top 10 Nintendo 64 Games of All Time.

Gaming Perfected.

A strangely little-known fact is that Perfect Dark is in actually a pseudo-sequel to the significantly more popular GoldenEye 64. So if you liked that game, you can pretty much stop reading now and purchase PD (Perfect Dark) without worry--it's every bit as excellent as that title.

STORY
This game actually has one of the most compelling storylines to grace the Nintendo 64, not particularly for its originality, which is maybe arguably cliché at times, but mostly for its delivery and superb fit for a first-person shooter. The story will keep you guessing and leave you starving for more. The characters are well developed and all bring something significant to the game in terms of value.

CONTROL
The control scheme in GoldenEye was so well-executed that Rare--the company that developed PD and GE (GoldenEye)--decided not to fix what wasn't broken. PD has amazingly fluent control for a FPS which uses only one analog stick. The C-buttons strafe and look vertically so you don't have to worry about firing in one direction and running in another much less standing still in order to aim--which you can still do with the R-button. Overall, the control scheme is responsive and intuitive.

GAMEPLAY
PD has plenty of missions to play through and each is rife with novel enemies and multiple tasks required to accomplish each mission so the duration of every level is decent, and in some cases pleasantly lengthy. PD's presentation is so rich in production value that even the longer levels leave you euphoric. However, downright frustration results from the AI. PD houses some of the most lethal simulated opponents known to gamers. Most of these are reserved for the Combat Simulator--which is the multiplayer section detailed below--but the foes you face on the highest difficulty setting, Perfect Agent are ruthless. There three difficulty settings. The first two, Agent and Special Agent, are your standard Easy and Medium difficulty levels.

MULTIPLAYER
PD has one of the best multiplayer modes on any console. The sheer amount of customizable options is enough to induce salivation. Everything is customizable from the individual weapons to characters, simulants, game-type, teams and maps. Matches support up to eight simulants and four human players. This is in fact the only time when PD is noticeably "ugly." The frame rate dips drastically at times when all the combatants are in the same room and/or using a hefty amount of explosives. This dramatically disturbs the experience as the gameplay is too choppy for any real accuracy of control. However, even with the frame rate issue, these huge battles are still fun. Co-op mode is also a welcome addition and is a great alternative for two-players looking for more than the standard death match.

REPLAY VALUE
PD has an above average amount of unlockable content and extends its replay value tremendously as a result. Because both the multiplayer and single-player are so well-done, PD is a solid title for lasting value.

THE GOOD: The brilliance of the single player mode and the nearly perfect multiplayer mode launch PD into the stratosphere of gaming excellence.

THE BAD: Difficulty is sometimes frustratingly robust.

THE UGLY: Multiplayer matches heavy on combatants or explosive weaponry kill the frame rate.
