A former Kansan's review of the movie "Picnic"

Some of this movie was filmed in my hometown (Salina, KS) in 1955, but I want to be objective about it. This movie was developed from a Broadway play, and I feel that most of the characters are developed in kind of a heavy-handed way that probably worked better on the stage than they do in a movie. The two actors in the movie who did the best at trying to tone that down and make their characters seem more believable were William Holden and Cliff Robertson. The people who made this movie did a good job with picking their locations for filming in Salina. The railyard scenes are in such an obscure spot that I had no idea where it was until I found a website with the information. The rich kid's house was easy. I know exactly where it is. As far as the DVD itself, the color and sound are great in this restored version. Just don't expect a realistic story, because it's not. It must be entertaining, though, because I've watched it several times in just the short time I've had it. Read full review

Title is wonderful

This DVD was a pirated copy and large chunks of the picture had been cut out, hacked up. I know because I have seen this wonderful picture several times over the years and never get tired of it. If you buy a DVD go on You Tube and learn how to spot a pirated copy.Read full review

Picnic is a Labor Day weekend delight to watch!

I bought this DVD movie, because someone told me there were 2 nice 1955 Lincolns in it, and as an old car buff, I wanted to see them. But aside from the Lincolns, which were beautiful, the story line and the acting was really good and very entertaining.Read full review

Very retro and vintage depiction of making choices in one's life

Very retro and vintage entertainment. Accurately depics the frightening situation of being down on your luck. People sometimes make bad decisions in life and this movie provides the audience with various examples. The movie only shows a brief moment in time, so the long term outcomes are not shown.Read full review
