Rango

A pet chameleon who has lived his entire life in the confines of a cozy glass terrarium discovers adventure beyond his wildest imagination in this animated Western adventure from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. When we first meet Rango (voice of Johnny Depp), the sheltered pet chameleon is safe in his terrarium, and embarking on epic adventures through the power of imagination. Then, suddenly, his safe existence is irrevocably upended thanks to a bump in the road that sends him soaring out of a car window and right onto the searing-hot asphalt of a desert highway. On the advice of a wise armadillo who relays the story of the Spirit of the West, our conical-eyed hero sets out in search of a town called Dirt, narrowly escaping a hungry hawk and encountering a self-sufficient pioneer named Beans (voice of Isla Fisher) along the way. Upon arriving in the dusty desert town, Rango wanders into the local bar and convinces the townspeople that he's a notorious gunslinger with a lightning-fast trigger finger. When one of the locals challenges Rango to a showdown on Main Street, the hawk that menaced our hero on his way to town shows up looking for a rematch, and ends up beak-down in the dirt. Convinced that Rango is the real deal, the Mayor (voice of Ned Beatty) decides to name the brave chameleon their new sheriff. But Rango's honeymoon in Dirt is short-lived when bandits steal the town's entire supply of water, and the newly christened sheriff forms a posse in order to get it back. Little do they realize they were all being manipulated by one greedy power-monger who's determined to keep the people of Dirt under his thumb with the help of a diabolical villain named Rattlesnake Jake (voice of Bill Nighy) whose Gatling-gun tail makes Swiss cheese of all challengers. Now, if Rango can just locate the Spirit of the West (voice of Timothy Olyphant) and summon the courage to realize his true potential, perhaps he can finally free the people of Dirt from the tyranny that binds them, and discover his true destiny under the scorching desert sun. ~ Jason Buchanan, RoviRead full review...

The best animation still to this day.

There is a reason this movie won so many awards. The developmental hell this went through in 8 years just to get the main character right. The fact that the lead animator said no straight lines on any of the structures. The use of ILM to bring it to the final stages. There was so much put into this movie that no animated movie before, and to this day, after, has even come close to the detail and realness of this movie. The Easter eggs are all over the place. This plays like a big budget comedy adventure and action western that pays homage to Spaghetti westerns, John Wayne westerns, and Spielberg action and adventure comedy epics. The producers, directors, and actors took a small amount of source material and did some magic and made it into something truly extraordinary. There's a little humor that goes above children's heads, so parental guidance is a good idea. No more so than the Goonies or Gremlins, but grab some "low calorie popcorn" and sit back and enjoy. Also included the extended version.Read full review...

Well done in every direction

Great parody of the Italian western genre complete with the most unsavory looking animal characters to ever grace the screen. Well written, fast paced and legitimately funny. Many
‘In jokes’ may go over a lot of children’s heads but adults will
Catch em. Blue-ray version picks up every scale, feather and
Bead of sweat in beautiful HD detail. Highly recommended.

Great sense of humor. Two thumbs up!!

This is not a simple animation movie. You might need a dictionary to understand what the Actors and Actresses were saying..... Once you understand they were saying. This movie have a great sense of humor.Read full review...

Good fun, great visuals

While the show is entertaining where it really shines is the visuals.

This bluray is great to really show what high definition can do.

This disc (the orange case 2 disc version) is currently the only way to get the extended version. Both vesions are on the one disk. There're run downs of the excact differences online.

For what is worth, to me, the extended version seems to be the better, darker, more existentialist, adult one.

Perfect movie if you have an open mind and want something AMAZING!

I love this movie. One of the best to come out in a long time. If you want to watch the same boring CG movie that you have seen 100 times before, then this is not the movie for you. It is different and different in my mind is good. A lot of great action from the very talented people at ILM (if you don't know what company that is then you don't watch a lot of movies). I can only hope that they keep pushing the bounders of the animation industry. Pixer is great at telling a story but Rango just feels different in so many ways. The story is great but the visuals are unbelievable.Read full review...

a few bumps along the way but overall a fun popcorn movie.

I give this movie a 5 star rating for overall watchability & just being a fun animated spaghetti western, that's not to say it doesn't have it's problems. I think the movie itself is a 2 star movie but overall it's a 5 star. The plot could have been tightened up a whole lot & a few more jokes or funny asides could have been done better to inject more laughs. The reason for 5 is as follows --- the movie itself 2 stars, the animation is dead on perfect 1 star (that makes 3), the voice work is spot on 1 star (that makes 4) and the extras on the blu ray are great 1 star (that makes 5)Read full review...
