Great Stereo / Horrible 5.1

The GOOD:
The stereo layer is amazing. This is a well recorded, engineered, and mixed album. It is perfect and the SACD brings all of that out. Micks drums are popping out of the speakers. He is slamming the kick and the snare and they sound great. It sounds like it should. I have been listening to this record ever since 1977. The stereo soundstage is distinct and spacious. It is worth the purchase just for the stereo layer. They did not over emphasize anything. John’s bass is smooth and punchy. Lindsey's guitar work is jaw dropping. Hearing Lindsey plucking his strings on “Never Going Back Again” is a treat. Stevie’s voice is of course so smooth and gritty at the same time. “Gold Dust Woman” is mystical and powerful. This is everything I thought this record should sound like. It sounds great turned up real loud.

The BAD:
The 5.1 mix is a mess. I was really looking forward to hearing this in 5.1 thinking it would sound out of this world. I am appalled at what they did to this thing. Instruments that were never there were mixed in. The vocal mixes are all over the place. Mick’s drums have all but disappeared. Someone really liked Stevie Nicks because her vocals are way up in the mix in just about every song. Sometimes it even sounds like an alternate vocal take was used. It even sounds like they EQ'ed her voice to make it sound different in some areas. There is extra reverb on the vocals & instruments that drown out the rest of the mix. John McVie’s bass is boomy and sounds unnatural. This is the worst 5.1 mix I have ever heard. It isn’t even a novelty. Who decides to wreck one of the greatest rock albums of all time? I can understand why they put in Silver Springs. It was originally planned for the album back in ‘77, but was cut due to the time restraints of vinyl. But come on, this record did not need "fixing". For some reason they decided to swap “Gold Dust Woman” with “Oh Daddy” as the last song. Having GDW as the last song left the album on such a dark & haunting note, which I thought was courageous. I know Ken Callut, who engineered the original album, mixed the 5.1 version; but he did not do it justice.

Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" SACD 5.1

I was never a Fleetwood Mac fan and I have never purchased an album by them until now. If you are a fan of high resolution 5.1 then buy this Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" SACD in 5.1 surround sound. If you were like me and didn't care for this band or that album which was huge in 1977, most likely you will like it and more importantly appreciate it. The SACD version is outstanding with great separation and detail. I can finally appreciate this album and see it for what it was worth and forget about all the car radio listening times of it. That's why I never liked it but in this format, what's not to like, even for me. The SACD version will open your mind.Read full review...

A gamble, true. But for me, a no-brainer!

What's not to like about this? It shifted (back then & to this day) shed-loads of copies. Musically it was a staple intro into more serious music for many a person back then (excluding punk of course). This version of it? You will probably not hear a better non-vinyl version of the album (this is noticeably better than the hi-res dvd-audio). The music has clearly stood the test of time & sounds (with this shm-sacd version) as if that layer of dust & scratches on my well-worn vinyl copy has been literally ripped away - to reveal a vibrancy & clarity to die for. It's such a shame that the mainstream technology of the day back then would not have been up to the replay level performance of today's equipment & media. As for me, it has breathed new life into what was already a long-standing favourite, classic album. I am aware of, but won't be getting - the anniversary, zillion disc version of this as I am not really interested in out-takes, early versions of the tracks, as I suspect it simply won't have the verve & emotive sparkle which this clearly does. The Japanese certainly know how to make a premium recording sound exactly as it should i.e. heaps better than any previous version of this (& hence it is well worth shelling out for). Word of warning though, to those who wish to buy this version - beware of customs duties as this slaps on a further £14 on top of what you have already paid! Having said that - I would still say it was worth it, as I have rediscovered my love of this album!Read full review...

Fabulous!

Great recording, talent and dynamic range. I highly recommend this SACD, especially if you were around when it was originally released and playing on the radio. Sounds way better now though.

The mastering is quite strange and methods vary widely from track to track. Buy a remastered version and you will be better off.

Classic album in SACD

This classic album has been wonderfully remastered for SACD. The backgrounds are noiseless, instruments sparkle, and separation among voices & instruments is excellent. This album is an example of what the format is capable of producing.Read full review...
