Good quality on a budget

Nice construction for the price and nice quality sound. Excellent low budget speaker system. Compared to the powered Behringer 12" speakers these are a little more balanced in frequency range but are just as efficient and put out the same SPL as the Behringer. Where the Behringer is very harsh in the midrange, these Star Audio speakers are much warmer and very natural sounding across the frequency range. I ran the amplifier to just under the clip light and did not notice any distortion or "crapping out" like other Class D amplifiers. I like the SD card reader for playing music and the built in FM radio tuner could be handy, too. I cannot figure out how the USB slot works since it will not recognize mp3 files on a flash drive but the SD card does, so that's okay. Note on SD card reader, it does not recognize file folders - only the mp3 files so if you have your files in a bunch of folders, the card reader is just going to open all of them and put them in alphabetical order. The passive speaker is equally as nice for sound quality, but the off-brand Speakon connectors on the included speaker cable are a little flimsy and don't lock into the connectors very well. Solution is to just get a speaker cable with original Neutrick Speakon connectors, and all is well. The included mini tripod stands are okay but I wouldn't trust them to not tip over in a high foot traffic area so get yourself a full size set of tripod stands for safety. So, So

I purchased this to be used as a vocal PA for a trio, Bass, Guitar and Drums, with two vocalists. It came in two boxes pretty fast from NY to CA. Upon opening, noticed there were a few parts missing, ie a few bolts. No problem there. I trip to the hardware store can fix that. I opened the box with the speakers, and at first thought, oh my, they forgot to pack the mixer. They instructions are useless. All they consist of is a parts list, along with a phone number email address of the manufacturer(mor on that below).

After a few minutes. I saw what was going on. the mixer is attached to one speaker, and the picture they have right below the mixer attaches to the other speaker and contains the cables. I thought this was a pretty cool design in that my car has limited space for transport to gigs. I plugged the mixer in and connected the speakers. Turned on fine. I connected a mike using a 1/4 inch plug at first, and noticed right away, gosh, this seems to lack power...I then tried the same mike with an XL plug and thought that's more like it. I took it tom my bass players place for one of our weekly rehearsals. She's a a newbie and didn't know what a PA is for, but was really impressed once it was hooked up. The next morning, I played with it some more only to see, the monitor inputs did not work. It comes with two sets(rcas and quarter inch) neither worked with my external speaker cabinet or with the speakers that came with the unit. The "manual" a three page insert only has a parts list, and a phone number and email of the manufacteror, with a strong encouragement to contact them in the event of a problem. The phone number is disconnected and so far I've received no response to my emails to the seller or the contact info in the "manual". In summary, I would like to keep this in that it is portable and seems to have enough power for us, but I really need the monitor function. I would like to exchange the mixer for one that works. I don't want to return everything, just the mixer.

I have now changed to 4 stars in that the seller has promised an exchange on the mixer. The system is pretty good otherwise, and seems to provide enough power and pretty good quality sound for a vocal PA for a moderately loud trio, guitar, bass and drums.Read full review
